County Four Wood Pairs

WITH the New Year celebrations barely over Cornwall’s Short Mat Bowlers were back in action over the weekend at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club for the County Four Wood Pairs.

On Saturday, 24 teams were drawn in six groups of four with group winners and two runners-up going forward to a knock-out round.

Blisland’s Mike Webster and Henry Matthews topped Group One with four points +16 shots ahead of Neil Gribble (Landrake) and Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel) on 4 +10 which earned them the second of the two runners-up spots.

Mark Payne (Newlyn Trinity) and Nigel Jelbert (Penlee) topped Group Two with 6 +21 with Wadebridge’s Robin Burden and John Menhenick second on 2 -3. Treviscoe’s Sarah Grimshaw and Tony Jago took the top spot in Group Three with 6 +15, while second placed Henry Kendall and Tony Liddicoat (Withiel) claimed the first of the runners-up spots with 4 +13.

Group Four winners were Martin Boraston (East Taphouse) and Gary Davey (Landrake) with 6 +27 ahead of Liskeard’s Shelia Hodge and Tony Baldwin on 4 +7.

Dobwalls’ Bill Sharp and Brenda Sleep topped Group Five with 6 +28 with Treviscoe’s Carolyn and Jim Stanley second on 2 -8.

Group Six saw another Treviscoe pairing in top spot with Chris Fry and Tom Westlake on 6 +25 with Hayle’s June Trestrail and Chris Harris second on 4 +9.

In the knock-out round, G Cawrse defeated N Jelbert 12-5, while T Jago raced to a 9-0 lead against H Matthews and, despite a comeback from the latter, went on to win 10-6.

Scores of three on each of the first two ends set up G Davey for an 11-5 win against T Westlake and in the final game T Liddicoat defeated B Sleep 9-6.

On Sunday, 22 teams were drawn into five groups, one of six and four of four with group winners and three runners-up going forward to a knock-out round.

Ladock’s Sandra and John Worton topped Group One with 6 +37 ahead of Betty Temple-Smith (Blisland) and Ruth Newbury (Wadebridge) on 4 +11 who qualified as second runners-up.

Holman’s Elise Daniell and Peter Hore won Group Two with 5 +18 with Landrake’s Dennis Shorthouse and Richard Kerr second on 4 + 12 to give them the top runners-up spot.

The weekends top score came in Group Three where David Balow (Marazion) and David Studden (Holmans) scored 6 +46 ahead of Ladock’s Richard Brown and Graham Luke on 4 +1.

Illogan’s Linda Martin and Gerald Fisher topped Group Four on 4 +15 ahead of Kath Goodman (Treviscoe) and Karen Watson (Saltash) on 4 +7 who took the final runners-up spot. Newlyn Trinity’s Mike Dyer and Nigel Nicholls took top spot in Group Five with 6 +24 ahead of Wadebridge’s David Shaw and Paul Spencer on 4 +\- 0.

The draw for the knock-out round saw the three qualified runners-up face the pairings they had already met in the group stages. P Hore came from 0-5 down against R Kerr to win 10-7.

In a game which saw the lead change hands four times, and never more than two shots advantage either way, D Studden defeated N Nicholls 8-6, while K Watson won 7 of the 9 ends against G Fisher to win 8-4 and the final game saw R Newbury defeat J Worton 9-6.

Swedish Masters

THIS weekend Peter Hore, Elise Daniell and Nigel Nicholls travel to Stromstad in Sweeden to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour Swedish Masters.

Peter is drawn in Group Two where he will face Stephen Proctor and James Smith from England, Norway’s Frode Coppered and Kai Aslak Holte and Sweden’s Peter Cronstromin.

In Group Seven Nigel faces Sweden’s Birgit Dahlgren, Ingvar Nelson, Eva Nelson and Ulf Hällstrand and Northern Ireland’s Sam Moore.

Elise is drawn in Group Nine where Sweden’s Jorgen Karlsson and Lillian Gjermo, Isle of Man’s Michael Collister, Norway’s Kjetil Grønseth and Belguim’s Dimitri Payne provide the opposition.

Forthcoming Events

FOR the rest of January, with the exception of the final round of Inter Area League fixtures on Sunday, January 17, English Association events take over the calendar.

On January 16, the ESMBA Open Fours will be contested with the winners earning a place in the England team at the forthcoming World Championships. The following day the England squad have a practice day planned.

The following weekend regional qualifiers for the ESMBA/Torquay Leisure Hotels Top Club will be played.

On Saturday, January 30 the Cornwall A team have qualified to play will play the ICC Rinks finals in Daventry against Kent, West Sussex, Suffolk, Surrey, Somerset, North Yorkshire and Northampton.
