WHITSTONE Carnival returned this year with fantastic support.
The schedule of events saw the village enjoying two weekend of events. The events started on Friday, July 13, with an afternoon of children’s sports where all ages competed in the egg and spoon, sack race and apple bobbing.
Thanks were expressed to Andrew and Emily Medland who organised the sports, a lovely afternoon was had by all — young and old.
The produce show for 2018 was well supported with numerous entries and at such a high standard. The carnival committee thanked all who helped in the preparation of the show, Pearl Hopper who co-ordinated the organisation, the steward and judges; Pat Penno, Courtney Drew, Janet Hewitt and Ingrid Bray.
Thanks were also expressed to Phil and Julie Tucker for the donation for the printed prize cards for the produce show. The carnival committee said it was in a fortunate position to be able to redistribute money raised from the 2017 carnival to the village organisations — a total of £1,200 was donated.
The Saturday, July 14, activities concluded with the ‘Whitstone Set the Ball Rolling’ an event that saw 200 footballs being sold prior to the event. The balls were then loaded into a trailer and released down a well rehearsed course, the first ball past the post was the winner and collected £100.
The evening was rounded off with a bar and barbecue with thanks being expressed to the parish council for organising the event. Winners were: 1st Justin Uglow, 2nd Andrew Medland, 3rd Mr Heal.
The village skittles evening was held on Friday, July 20, with eight teams of six competing for the highest score. Children played first with three teams of six competiting. Then adult players enjoyed the bar and pasties and the cup winners were a team comprising of Ian Braund, Jason Colwill, Kevin and Kayleigh Dawe, Mark Moore and Diane Wickens.
On Saturday, July 21, the village turned out for the grand carnival, the event was very well supported and showed the wonderful community spirit in Whitstone.
Thankfully the village basked in sunshine. There was a number of children’s fancy dress walkers, floats and group walkers and the procession was led by Launceston Town Band who provided a great atmosphere for the event.
The carnival finished in the village hall where everyone was able to enjoy side stalls, which were organised by the various charities and groups in the village. The evening continued with a barbecue, and thanks were expressed to Grace Martyn, Jo and Tom Fowler and Margaret Short and a bar that was run by Nick and Wendy Furse.
The committee thanked the carnival judges Rob and Sue Dickenson, Carol and Michael Woodley.
The carnival chairman Justin Uglow and secretary Charlotte Hopper expressed their thanks to everyone involved for all their help during a busy and successful week.
Money raised during the week will be distributed to local organisations in 2019.
