TYPICAL English weather has brought work on a town's park to a sluggish pace and cost the town council an unexpected £6,000.

Holsworthy Town Council agreed to spend an extra amount on drainage for Stanhope Park, at its meeting last week.

Drains already in place have been unable to cope with the high rainfall and the ground has become a mire. As a result, £2,500 has been spent on extra drainage. Work on the area known as the 'den' in the park is almost complete, but this has also needed an extra £3,500.

Cllr Ken Watson updated councillors on the situation. He said: "An urgent site visit was held today (November 6) which showed the terrible problems experienced with the rainfall."

Cllr Brian Harris said: "I can't believe that a professional didn't include drainage already — I have been digging pits nearly every day of my life, I just can't believe they did not include drainage in the first place."
