Bude has turned gold in aid of childhood cancer awareness month.

During September, gold bikes were placed around Bude and surrounding areas and over 28 businesses across Bude turned their windows gold for the month of July. The event was organised by Talan’s Trust, a local charity which seeks to raise awareness for the risks of childhood cancer.

Talan’s Trust is a cancer awareness charity which was set up after Talan Penny, an 18 year old Bude local who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), a type of soft tissue sarcoma that grows in active muscles of the body. The trust now carry out a number of awareness and fundraising campaigns in aid of those suffering from the same.

This month, bikes covered the town and local schools, inculding Budehaven Bude Juniors Stratton Kilkhampton Marhamchurch and Jacobstowe. Each bike featured a picture of Talan, some of the signs and symptoms childhood cancer and the names of local businesses who kindly sponsored the bikes.

Sarah Penny, Talan’s mother and chairman for the organisation said: “Sadly childhood cancer remains the biggest cause of medical death of children in the uk.

“Just under 4,000 children and young people will recieve a cancer diagnosis each year.

Talan’s Trust are committed to raising both awareness of the signs and symptoms to empower parents and caregivers and to raise funds for research into rhabdomyosarcoma the cancer Talan Penny died from in 2017.”

Thanks to events such as this, Talan’s Trust have raised more than £100,000 with the help of their supporters.
