NEWCOMERS can get a taste of hunting, entirely free of charge, when the Tetcott Hunt opens its doors to welcome those with an interest in finding out more.

People can get the opportunity to try exempt hunting, in this case trail-hunting, to learn more about the way hunts work and the role they play in the British countryside.

Hunt chairman Julian Smeeth said: "This special newcomers' day is all about getting people, adults and children alike, out enjoying themselves. There is no need to worry about wearing the correct riding kit as normally worn by hunt members.

"There will be optional jumps and non-jumpers will be cared for and taken around jumps to ensure that everyone gets a good day's riding off road behind hounds. Experienced riders will be on hand to accompany the more nervous and all we want to do is to get people out with us following hounds across beautiful open countryside."

This newcomers' day is all part of the Countryside Alliance's Newcomers' Week with packs taking part countrywide.

A spokesman for the Alliance said: "Hunts will give both people who ride, and those who don't, the opportunity to hunt and see what it's all about. It offers a timely opportunity for the public to embrace and enjoy hunting for free.

"The future of hunting will not be ensured by repeal of the Hunting Act alone. Whenever repeal comes, and it seems increasingly imminent, hunting must continue to sell itself to new markets and encourage the next generation of support for hunts."

The Tetcott Hunt covers an area running from Clovelly to Wainhouse Corner and from Holsworthy to Bude, a huge area of fantastic open countryside.

The newcomers' day takes place on Saturday, October 10 at Sudcott, just off the A39 between Camelford and Bude at Treskinnick Cross. To ensure a successful day the hunt's official trail-setter, Barry Butler, will be out at dawn on a quad bike laying a trail for the hounds to follow. Those wishing to take part should arrive no later than 10.30am ready to move off with the hounds at 11am.
