TO PEOPLE who know her work, artist Rose Hitchings is often referred to as the 'Beryl Cook of Bridgerule', writes Christine Williams.

Beryl Cook, who lived in Plymouth and died in 2008, was best known for her paintings of ordinary people out enjoying themselves. They were as saucy as seaside postcards, often vulgar and raucous and populated by plump people in everyday situations.

Like Beryl, Rose never had any formal art training, but finding she was not very good at landscapes or portraits, she turned her hand to cartoons.
