NORTH Cornwall residents are being urged to prepare as changes are set to be made to the region’s home phone network.

Residents across the area are served by the Wadebridge telephone exchange, however, the site was recently confirmed to be among the latest to enter Openreach's digital switchover programme.

The change is part of the latest phase of the UK's transition from the ageing analogue Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to modern Digital Voice services.

Across North Cornwall, many households still rely on their home phone to stay connected with family, neighbours and essential services, therefore, they are being urged to do their research regarding what the changes mean before communications providers begin contacting customers.

While the nationwide switch-off is due to complete by January 31, 2027, many people are still unsure what the changes mean for them. Common questions include whether they'll be able to keep their existing home phone number, continue using their current handset, whether broadband is needed and what happens during a power cut.

Bryn Thompson, director at Phonely, said: "For many households across North Cornwall, the home phone is still an important part of everyday life. The good news is that, for most people, it's possible to keep both the number they've had for years and the handset they're familiar with.

"The important thing is to understand what's changing before your provider gets in touch, rather than leaving everything until the last minute."

Ahead of the change, residents should know that they can usually keep their existing home phone number; many people can continue using their current handset with the right equipment; broadband and home phone services don't necessarily have to be with the same provider; and those using a telecare alarm or pendant should check with their provider before switching.
