SOME of Launceston’s future musicians have had the chance to get involved in a masterclass led by an award-winning pianist.

Pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 at St Stephen’s Community Academy were given a private lesson with international pianist Yulia Chaplin.

Yulia, is the winner of seven international piano competitions and a professor at the prestigious Rostov State Rachmaninoff Conservatoire in her hometown of Rostov‑on‑Don in Russia.

Her visit forms part of the St Stephen’s Concert Series, hosted by St Stephen’s Church in Launceston.

A spokesperson from the church said: “The St Stephen’s Concert Series is part of an initiative to bring music opportunities to local children. Every musician is asked to offer free music workshops for local school children, and also to offer Masterclasses for learners locally to enjoy at low costs. So far, all of our performers have been extremely generous with their time, and we have enjoyed a varied range of workshops from cello to viola to hurdy-gurdy!”

During her visit, Yulia captivated both staff and students with her impressive knowledge and even more impressive musical ability.

Executive headteacher at the school, Maura Furber said: “She captivated us from the moment she began. Yulia shared fascinating insights into the piano, answered thoughtful questions from the children, and then filled our beautiful local church with the breathtaking sound of live music. Hearing a musician of her calibre perform right in front of us was truly awe‑inspiring — an unforgettable moment that left everyone spellbound.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to Rev. Jess Lancaster, whose support and coordination made this once‑in‑a‑lifetime experience possible. What a wonderful opportunity for our pupils, and what a privilege to enjoy it in such a special setting within our community.”
