Boscastle’s busker raised £1,300 in memory of his friend. John Maughan, of Boscastle, set himself a target of £1,000 to honour a promise he made to his friend Graham Morgan, who died in Mounty Edgecombe Hospital.
Police were called to a bomb scare at Holsworthy Memorial Hall on the morning of Wednesday last.
Bude police have dealt with 75 incidents from June 25 to July 1, with 16 crimes being reported.
Dancers from Pyworthy Primary School took part in a 12 hour sponsored linedance by Shirley’s Bootscooters, at Pyworthy Hall on June 23 in aid of Holsworthy Hospital League of Friends Dialysis Unit. Taking part were Gregory Parish, Amy Littlejohn, Laura Axford, Luke Conta, Catherine Skinner, Gabrielle Axford, Tina Moore, Elizabeth Gunton-Bunn, Alex O’Farrell, Charlotte Merchant, Sian Howard, Ben Conta anf Xenia Howarth.

Summerleaze beach at Bude is to be surveyed to see if it is suitable for the construction of a long sewage outfall into the sea, from a fine screening plant that may be built near The Castle. Work on the geophysical and geotechnical survey is due to start later this month and continue into August and will also monitor conditions on the beach during the winter.
Torrential rain greeted the morning of Midsummer Day this year, casting doubts at St Mark’s School, Morwenstow, that on this patrocnal festival day their sports might have to be cancelled — but the weather improved in time.

Through a loaded airgun falling from a window ledge, Mrs Helen Gibson, of Lower Bamham, Launceston, was accidentally shot in the heel at her home on Tuesday. She was taken to Freedom Fields Casualty Department, where the pellett was successfully removed.
Mr G W Kneebone was president of this year’s Marhamchurch Show held on Saturday in one of Messrs Trewin’s fields at Chistney Cross. E Dell on Bodvoc Castanova won the North Cornwall ridden pony championship.
A second pupil of Clawton C P School has been awarded a scholarship at Christ’s Hospital Girls School in Herefordshire. She is Jennifer Jane Watts, only daughter of Mr and Mrs J R Watts, Fairway Farm, Ashwater.
Mr B L Setchell introduced Mrs Raymond-Baker who opened the annual fete of Delabole branch of the Royal British Legion. She was presented with a basket of fruit by Gwenda Evans.
Five girls of Laucneston Athletic Club clad in see-through nighties were the overall winners of the bedstead derby at Launceston. First home were the ‘Udder Team’ of Launceston Young Farmers (Roger Strout, Lester Lashbrook, Mike King, Richard Butter and Ann Wonnacott).

This year’s Holsworthy Pretty Maid is 17-year-old Valerie Westaway, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Grenville Westaway, of the Anchorage, North Road, Holsworthy.
The new swimming pool at Bude-Stratton Secondary School was officially opened by Mr F R James, a former headmaster postmaster at Launceston.
Mr F J Horsford has retired after serving in the post office for 36 years, the last 10 of which have been as head postmaster at Launceston.

A postman going to clear the pillar box in the hamlet of Dutson, just outside Launceston on Tuesday, found a swarm of bees in possession. He had to admit defeat and returned to Head Office in Launceston to report the hold-up of Her Majesty’s mail. Postman Bob Green regarded as an amateur expert in these matters, then went on to Dutson, complete with protective veil and gloves. Later Rob returned in triumph with the bees in a cardboard box and some on his hands.
Mr Dingle Fox, formerly Liberal candidate for North Cornwall, has announced his intention of joining the Labour party. The announcement came on Monday in the form of a letter from mr Foot and two other Liberals to Mr Gaitskell, the Labour leader. it stated that the three signatures were convinced that “in the circumstances of today this is the only way we can give effect to the views we hold”.

At their meeting at Camelford on Wednesday, the North Cornwall Joint Water Board decided unanimously to seek sanction for the laying of a duplicate pipeline from the intake at Crowdy Marsh to the reservoir at Delabole following a new route south of Camelford. The Board raised no objection to the use of prisoner-of-war labour for the work.
The rector of Ashwater (Rev L C Mallett), who is leaving after 11 years, was presented with a cheque by Mr J Burnett on behalf of parishioners, and Mrs Mallett was presented with a prayer book and serviette ring by Margaret Moon and Reggie Lock.
Mr Jim Treleaven, 28, has been elected as president of Launceston Brotherhood to succeed his late grandfather, Freeman James Treleaven, who occupied that position for 56 years.
During a British Legion silver jubilee concert at the Lecture Hall, Stratton, the lights failed during the play being presented by the Women’s Institute. Taking post were: Misses I Bright, B Newman, M Slee and Mrs P Hocken, and other artists were Messrs W Parnell, T Griffiths, K Axford, Bert Ellis, Rev T W Gilbert, Mr and Mrs Cyril Colwill, Mrs B Worden, Misses Patricia Dear and Celia Ward, Master L Hockin and L Tapson.

Recent excavation has shown that the promontory at Tintagel, now known as the island, was occupied by a Roman farmstead dating from the fourth centuary which was followed by a Celtic Monastary on the same site.
Two hundred members of the North Devon Provincial Grand Lodge, RAOB, attended their annual church parade at Holsworthy on Sunday. Headed by Morwenstow Band, they marched from Stanhope Park to the parish church for a service conducted by the rector, Rev Pitt-Johnson.

The government bill just introduced forbids the sale of such items as bacon, cheese, butter, sugar, tea, potatoes, by any method other than nett weight. Milk must be sold in pints of half pints.
Miss Ada Gwendoline Dingle, aged 20, was found dead in the road near Higher Rexon Farm, Broadwood, on Thursday, with a broken neck. She was cycling home from her work as a typist at Launceston and the front forks of her cycle had snapped due, it was claimed at the inquest, to the rough state of the road. Verdict: Accidental death.
