A bid for Lottery funding to give Holsworthy a virtually “new” Memorial Hall costing £400,000 is to be submitted by the end of June. The application for funding is expected to be approved, provided it is returned by the end of June 2001 — but time is quickly running out.

‘Time to move on for Hatherleigh’ — Long term plans to regenerate West Devon communities badly affected by the foot and mouth crisis are moving into place. Funding has now been secured for the Hatherleigh area project, which is being set up specifically to help the town and surrounding villages recover from the devastating outbreak.

After joining forces in the fundraising stakes around ten years ago, Launceston and District Guides, and the town’s scouts group have parted ways. The two groups first came together in a bid to raise enough money to build a centre, which they could share as a base.

June 21, 1986

St Giles schoolgirl Kellie Towl will trek across Dartmoor on Sunday to raise cash for an illness she has suffered from for the past two years. Kellie, aged 9, will walk from Okehampton to Two Bridge — a distance of 12 miles — with her mother, Maxine Towl, and 19 others, many of them diabetic.

Peter Rabbit and friends attended Holsworthy library on Wednesday week after he hopped in to tell children from Holsworthy Playgroup about his own story, and other stories about rabbits. Jean Sinclair, libraries, and Jean Godfrey, library relief assistant, organised the special storytime to give preschoolers an afternoon of fun and to encourage children to use the library.

June 19, 1976

Mr Ronald Smith, principal keeper at Hartland Point Lighthouse, received the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Mrs M Hawke and Mrs E Paynter, on behalf of North Petherwin WI, received the WI Royal Cornwall Show Cup from the Show President, Mrs Molesworth-St Aubyn.

“The Crescent car park at Bude had always been a white elephant”, Mr Richard Willoughby told North Cornwall’s Policy and Resources Committee. He thinks the money would be better spent on improving the car park at Widemouth Bay.

Mrs J H Sloman was elected chairman at the annual meeting of Launceston branch of Save the Children Fund. Miss E Morcom is secretary, and Mr R H Wiliamson treasurer.

‘The Quest’ decided to relaunch herself at Boscastle but luckily her owner, Mr Jim Whitehead, was present. He and Mr Michael Webber had repaired the boat which was severely damaged in a storm in September 1974.

June 18, 1966

Mr Roger Parnall has given notice of resignation from his appointment as clerk to the magistrates at Launceston and Bude.

There were four generations of Okes when George Oke, aged 85, of Teignmouth, posed with his son, Clifford George, 55, of 20, Trecarrell, Launceston, his grandson Norman James, 27, of St Johns Road, Launceston, and his great grandson Andrew James Oke.

At Holsworthy County Secondary School sports the medals for the outstanding athletes of the year were won by Joan Wonnacott and David Bowden.

June 30, 1956

Launceston and District Boxing Club is transferring its training headquarters to Launceston Drill Hall and a contest open to the public will be held there on Monday in celebration of this progressive move.

Seven Holsworthy girls — Margaret Eveleigh, Jennifer Parrish, Fay Webber, Christine Dymond, Carol Harris, Diane Painter and Valerie Masters — aged 13 to 15 and pupils of Holsworthy Secondary Modern School, handed over a wooden garden chalet to Dawfield Hospital on Thursday. Originally intending to provide a new seat, the girls raised money from jumble sales and decided instead to provide a chalet where patients could sit out. A brass plaque inside the building perpetuates their good deed.

June 22, 1946

Speaking at a meeting of Holsworthy NFU, Mr W Williams, chief technical officer of Devon Agricultural Executive Committee, forecast that bread rationing was on the way — and not merely for a few weeks or months.

Ald J Harvey is shortly to be made a Freeman of the Borough of Launceston and the Town Clerk (Mr S L Peter) is to become a Cornish Bard.

Mr S Grills, of Coast View, Stratton, has been informed that his son Gordon must be presumed killed. Gordon joined the Navy at the age of 15 and was on HMS Repulse at the fall of Singapore. He was 17 years 10 months.

Camelford Rural Council has decided that the salary of its Clerk should be £500 a year to include all legal work done by him on the council’s behalf. The Clerk (Mr B H Richardson) will continue at his own expense to employ Mr Kellow as minute clerk and deputy financial officer.

The Surveyor (Mr E A Hooper) reported to Holsworthy Rural Council on Wednesday a quotation of £1,250 per house for Woolaway houses, which could be erected at the rate of two per week.

On Saturday Mr Charles Langford of Maidenhead, and Miss Emma Chapman, Smallcombe, became the first couple to be married at Lifton Down Methodist Church, and accordingly were presented with a bible and hymn book.

June 20, 1936

Wadebridge Rural Council are searching for a suitable site for an aerodrome for their district.

A tithe distraint sale at Launceston on Friday was followed by a gift sale at which farmers bought the same items over and over again. There was strong speaking upon the tithe question, some saying they would rather go to prison than pay.

Launceston cattle market is to be remodelled at a cost of about £3,000 and in future auctioneers there will sell by rota.

Bude-Stratton Urban Council has just taken delivery of a new fire engine.

Reuben Tinney of Hazeldean, Tintagel, an employee at the Cliff Quarries, met his death on Tuesday. When Mr Tinney was working on a ledge in the cliff face he fell into the sea and rescue attempts proved futile.

June 26, 1926

Under the presidency of Mr T E Wakefield, the Camelford and District Agricultural Association’s 26th annual exhibition on Thursday was the best show ever seen at Camelford.

Launceston Town Council are purchasing land at St Stephens on which to erect 18 no-parlour type houses, estimated to cost a 2d rate. For a recent vacant council house, 43 applications were received.

The tenantry of the Pencarroww and Tetcott Estates assembled at Pencarrow, the Cornish seat of Sir Hugh and Lady St Aubyn, Thursday, to meet Mr John Molesworth-St Aubyn and his wife on the occasion of their marriage.
