The Night Run Club has been established by two Launceston locals, hoping to create an enjoyable , safe and social environment for women in the area to improve their running while having some fun.
Lisa Pratt and Josie Crabb have been running the club for less than a month, but already it has amassed an impressive membership.
Speaking to the Post, the pair said: “We are both female runners who now don’t feel confident with running in the evenings due to the darker weather, we don’t feel comfortable to run alone so we both came up with the idea of building a community of women who felt the same way and could come together not only to run but build friendships.
“It’s a free, non competitive group. We have invested in insurance and safety equipment ourselves to keep everyone safe and seen.”
Both Lisa and Josie are relatively new to running, Josie started her running journey a year ago not long after having her second child, while Lisa has been running for six months since starting her training for Hyrox - a global fitness race that combines running with functional workout stations and has become a benchmark for many fitness fanatics.
With the pair still making their way through their running journey, they wanted to create a space which could welcome runners of all abilities, and most importantly, promote a competitive environment.
Lisa and Josie explained: “Groups like this are important because they are rare, there are a lot of competitive groups. This group is for the safety, the motivation and to keep women active and confident in doing so. It brings the community together and helps new friendships blossom and a chance for some to have that social time!”
On November 3, the group held its first ever run, welcoming a collection of local runners to Launceston.
The turn out was amazing,” said the pair. “The atmosphere was more than we could imagine, the ladies really enjoyed themselves and so did we! We have had lots of interest and are expecting more on our next run!”
With the group already seeing support, Lisa and Josie are hopeful that even more ladies will join their ranks and start or continue their running journey.
They said: “It’s open to all women, from beginners to seasoned runners. It’s designed to keep everyone together and safe when out running in the dark. Everyone sticks together and nobody is left behind. If a group of more experienced runners get ahead we then wait for the newer runners and regroup, one organiser always stays upfront and at the back so we can really keep everyone together.
“You can get involved by following our facebook and instagram (The Night Run Club) or joining our WhatsApp group where we put in monthly schedules and then they can just turn up . We cover lots of areas surrounding Launceston.”
