ON Collapsed Curriculum day at Holsworthy Community College, 52 students from Year 8 went to the Devon Music Mix Festival.

This year it was held in the beautiful surroundings of Bridwell Park in Uffculme, a deer park and home to Lord Mountbatten’s family.

For those of you who saw the Spotlight News at 6.30pm on Wednesday, June 29, you will have seen a glimpse of the many activities that were on offer. Despite the rain a god day was had by most.

Student Joseph said: “We went to a big house to do some music on the computer. First we built a small electronic device that looked like a speaker, then we connected it to a computer and opened a python software program. We could change the music and when we ran the program the music came out of the speaker.”

Cade Davies said: “First we went to the main stage and listened to RSVP. Their Bhangra music was really good and funky, but we didn’t dance to it — only Miss Iles did! We learned how to play Taiko drums with movement and attitude. I enjoyed it because I have never played them before.”

Student Tom Simkins-Wright said: “We went to record for Park Field Extreme Radio! Jake Robinson and I were going around the massive field recording a commentary on the whole experience.”

Chris George said: “We went up to the Royal Opera tent where there were two opera singers — one man who was a tenor and a lady who was a soprano. We did some freeze framing while the opera singers sang.”

You can hear some of the performances in the end of year concert on Tuesday, July 19. To start the evening the college will be open to view an exhibition of students’ work relating to the Somme, which is displayed around the school. The concert will begin with poetry and songs of World War One. This will be followed by other musical performances from the choir and Holsworthy Community College musicians to celebrate the end of the year.
