SMALL stores in Week St Mary such as The Store and Post Office have now joined the fight against the single-use plastic carrier bag.

Since the introduction on October 5 of the 5 pence per bag scheme has seen retailers who employ over 250 fill-time staff across the country attempting to reduce the amount of single-use carrier bags being used and sent to landfill.

Although they do not qualify as large retailers for the purposes of the new regulations, employees at Week St Mary’s The Store and Post Office still want to do their bit.

Long time postmaster and member of Holsworthy District Lions Jeff Roberts introduced a voluntary charge of 5 pence per single-use carrier bag when new regulations came into effect.

Jeff presented the money raised from the customers of The Store and Post Office’s voluntary donations — totalling around £30 — to the Holsworthy and District Lions.

Lions’ President Brian Withall thanked Jeff, and the community of Week St Mary, for their generosity.
