PROPOSALS to change how Holsworthy Market operates have been deferred by its market committee.
At a meeting held on June 11, the council’s market committee discussed potential plans to change the town’s market to one run seasonally and increase the pricing levied to market traders to cover all costs.
It followed two resolutions by the full council in its extraordinary meeting on April 23, where it decided to discuss the agreed option to run the market on a seasonal basis and increase the cost of pitches.
However, it was decided to defer the two agenda items until October 2025 and seek the help of external consultants around the running of the outdoor market with the aim of improving the weekly offering in a bid to increase patronage.
The deferral comes amid changes in the finances of the long running market, with Holsworthy Town Council confirming that it had removed the costs of storage from the market’s budget.
A spokesperson for Holsworthy Town Council said: “At the market committee meeting held on June 11, 2025, the following agenda items were deferred:
“Item 10 – ‘’To discuss the agreed option to ‘’run the market seasonally’’ from Full Council Extraordinary meeting on April 23, and agree on the dates and times of operation’’
“Item 11- ‘’To discuss the agreed option to ‘’continue running the market but increase pricing to cover all costs’’ from Full Council Extraordinary meeting on April 23, and agree on the new rates’
“These items were deferred due to changes in the market finances as the council have now removed the cost of storage. As a result it was agreed that the council will seek professional advice from a consultant, specifically around the running of our Outdoor Market with the intention of improving the weekly offering.
“The Council intend to revisit Agenda items 10 and 11 by October 2025.”
