A YEAR 11 student at Holsworthy Community College has been praised after raising awareness of and £740 for a Devon charity.

Faith Johnson had a personal connection to the cause which her cake sale was in aid of after losing her mother to the condition, which is also known as a ‘blood cancer’.

The youngster said after the event that it was also an opportunity for her to reflect on the happy memories she shared with her mother while doing something positive for others going through a similar situation both now and in the future.

Faith said: “I recently organised and took part in a charity bake sale at my school, Holsworthy Community College, to raise money for the Exeter Leukaemia Fund, a cause that is very close to my heart. I chose to support this charity in remembrance of my mum, who bravely battled blood cancer. While this experience was incredibly difficult for me and my family, it also taught us the importance of kindness, strength, and support during the hardest moments of life.

Fundraising for the Exeter Leukaemia Fund was not only about raising money, but also about raising awareness of the life changing work the charity does for patients and families affected by blood cancer.

“It gave me the opportunity to reflect on all the happy memories I shared with my mum, and on how special it was to simply be by her side during her treatment and journey. Remembering her through something positive and meaningful made the experience even more emotional and rewarding.

”I hope that by sharing my story, I can inspire younger students at Holsworthy Community College and beyond to get involved in charity work throughout their time at school. Even small actions can make a big difference, and fundraising has shown me how powerful a supportive community can be.

“I am extremely grateful to everyone who donated, baked, bought cakes, or helped spread the word. Their kindness and generosity meant so much to me and my family, and it has made this experience one I will always remember with pride.”

Andrew Sweeney, the principal at Holsworthy Community College said: “We are incredibly proud of Faith for showing such courage, compassion, and determination. Turning a personal loss into a positive action that supports others is truly inspiring and reflects the strong values we encourage at Holsworthy Community College.

“This fundraiser not only raised vital funds for the Exeter Leukaemia Fund but also demonstrated the power of community spirit and empathy. It is wonderful to see our students leading by example and making a meaningful difference beyond the classroom.”

A spokesperson for Exeter Leukaemia Fund (ELF) praised Faith’s efforts and added: “If Faith has inspired you to get baking, then you can register for ELF's Summer Tea Party campaign! Host either a bake sale, a garden party or a BBQ for your family and friends between June to August and raise money for patients and families affected by blood cancer here in Devon.
