MEN in wellies, a streaker, the mayor in a union flag themed garb so bright it could be seen from the International Space Station and inclement weather.
While it might be a sentence used to pitch a potential sitcom about Holsworthy to big television bosses, in this instance it accurately surmises the chaos in mayoral chains and community fun that greeted the inaugural charity football event in aid of the mayor’s charities, which this year would see Holsworthy AFC and the town’s volunteer-run museum.
The day of football fun began at 3pm with something of a thrashing in favour of the home team, with the Holsworthy football club handing a mauling to Truro Reserves with a final score of 8-0 representing such a thrashing that it would bring back bad memories for any Southampton FC fans who may have watched the event.
A relatively conventional and sensible start to the day would give way to a parade of genuine mayhem on the pitch while the drinks flowed and the entertainment blasted off it.
For the second match, in a time where women’s football has increased in prominence, was a literal case of ‘here come the girls’ in a match to face off against a team of men who would spend the match with a deliciously rural handicap – they would have to play it in wellies.
It transpired that the handicap, along with some excellent football by the ladies team was too much for the men to surmount with their female counterparts proving successful in the battle of the genders, winning by a score line of 8-6.
As the day turned to night, it was soon time for the centrepiece event – a mayor’s select 11 facing off against Holsworthy Vets.
It began with 11 although at one point, the team selected by mayor Cllr Jon Hutchings actually had 21 players on the pitch. The chaos of the match was compounded with a member of the crowd using the opportunity to go starkers and have a quick streak across the pitch.
Numerical advantages, however, weren’t enough to overcome the opposition with the mayor’s team losing 6-3 to Holsworthy Vets.

After the event, Cllr Hutchings said: “The day started off very well with the Holsworthy 1st team beating Truro reserves 8-0!
“The second game was between the ‘Holsworthy ladies’ and a Holsworthy football club team, handicapped with wearing wellies. Final score 8-6! The men just couldn’t match the determination of the ladies!
“The final game was the ‘Mayor’s select team’ versus Holsworthy Vets. The mayors team unfortunately lost, even with 21 players on the pitch at one stage, to a very determined Vets side 6-3.”
“I have to say my mayors team were just outplayed, probably because the majority of the team hadn’t stepped foot on a pitch since school! Three brilliant games which kept the crowds amused! Unfortunately the rain took hold but the DJ's finished off the day on our stage.
“A huge thank you to everyone who helped put the event together and all who played.”
