Last Saturday, the annual Craft and Food Fair, organised by the Holsworthy Family Workshop Resource Centre and these days held in the Memorial Hall, gets bigger every year and attracted a large number of shoppers, no doubt with Christmas shopping in mind.
On entering the foyer visitors were greeted by local food producers, selling organic produce including fruit, vegetables and meat as well as cheeses, preserves and chutneys.
Inside the hall 25 stalls displayed a variety of goods demonstrating what a wealth of imagination and skill there is among local craftsmen and women.
There were displays of hand made jewellery, knitwear, ceramics, Japanese Raku pottery, willow and cane sculpture, contemporary stained glass, natural skin care products and greetings cards.
On one stall were beautiful brightly coloured artificial flowers made of fine net on wire, a skill imported from Thailand; on another the only non-local goods: hand knitted woven toys, mostly animals, made from hand spun plant dyed wool by Kenana Knitters, a Fairtrade women's cooperative in Kenya.
The Resource Centre had their own stall selling craft packs and kits and the children busied themselves creatively using model kits to make fairies and angels. Meanwhile in the café, at the end of the hall, delicious homemade cakes and lunches were served.
Proceeds from the fair go to help the work of the Centre, which provides a comprehensive support service for voluntary groups and families in the community, and runs creative workshops for children and parents. Details of what the centre has to offer can be obtained by ringing 01409 254272.
