Holsworthy Community College has been celebrating the achievements of pupils and offering mental health and wellbeing workshops to support their development.
The college, which is part of the Dartmoor Multi Academy Trust, celebrated the achievements of last year’s Year 11 students during an awards evening.
Awards acknowledged the hard work that students put in and offered and opportunity to receive their GCSE certificates.
Gareth Smith, principal of Holsworthy Community College, said: “It was a wonderful evening. It was fantastic to celebrate the well-deserved achievements of a year group who worked so hard during their time at Holsworthy Community College. The staff I spoke with really enjoyed reconnecting with their ex-students and hearing how well they were doing at college.
“I wish all the students the very best of luck with their future studies and congratulations to all of our award winners.”
Dartmoor Multi Academy Trust CEO, Dan Morrow, gave a keynote speech to all guest and award winners at the ceremony.
He said: “A truly wonderful evening celebrating our young people who showed such character and determination.
“We were so pleased to host school leaders from last generations as well as our generous local partners.”
As well as celebrating the achievements of previous students, the school has been ensuring the health and wellbeing of current students also, providing mental health and wellbeing workshops to pupils.
The workshops, run by Humantopia, an organisation which aims to support young people to make changes in their lives, allowed pupils to examine how to build resilience and how students interact with one another.
Through the workshops, students in Years 9 and 10 were given the opportunity to be trained to become “heroes” and going forward, these heroes will work as peer mentors and help support other students within the school by advocating for positive mental health and wellbeing.
Mr Smith added: “It’s been an incredible four days.
“Watching our students put themselves forward and talk about how they are feeling in front of the rest of their year group was incredibly powerful. The leadership shown by students shone through.
“We hope to grow our team of heroes so that the legacy of this programme can have a real impact within our school community and benefit students for years to come.”
