A group of army cadets from the Holsworthy detachment have enjoyed a 24 hour map and compass training exercise on Forestry Commission land at the Cookworthy plantation, near Holsworthy.

The activity, Operation Pathfinder, was organised and run by the detachment's adult instructors to give the group practical map and compass and camp craft training, as well as promote team work.

The cadets had to navigate for an hour cross country to locate their camp area on Saturday evening (September 11) and undertook two and a half hours of orienteering around the plantation Sunday morning after camping out.

But it wasn't all work with the adults providing a barbecue and cooked breakfast as a change to army rations.

Speaking for the detachment, Staff Sgt Jim Harvey said: "This weekend has allowed our young people to experience the beautiful Ruby countryside as well as develop useful and important life skills have fun and build friendships."

The detachment is able to take 28 young people camping thanks to a grant from the Youth Bank made earlier this year.
