ARMY Cadets from Holsworthy have had a busy and enjoyable summer joining other detachments from across the county and coming out on top at a recent camp.

Five cadets and four adult volunteers travelled to Longmoor Camp in Hampshire for a week of military and adventurous training with Devon Army Cadet Force (ACF).

Included was a Camp Challenge, where C (North) Company — of which Holsworthy is part of — were crowned “Camp Champions 2025”.

There was additional celebrations to be had when, during the camp, Holsworthy cadet Liam Williams was presented with his bronze Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) certificate. Detachment Commander Lt Jim Harvey also received a “Colonel South West Coin” regional award for excellence in relation to his commitment to The ACF at Holsworthy.

Cadets were informed that Devon ACF are running a second special “NHS Cadet” course which aims to show members interested in a medical career the training and employment opportunities available to them. This is being carried out at County HQ Pellew House Exeter and includes visits and demonstrations by NHS and other staff.

The course is led by former Holsworthy cadet, now county medical support officer, 2Lt Summer Ashbury and seven cadets from Holsworthy enrolled or are assisting with the activities.

More recently cadets have undertaken ‘Adventurous Training’ including mountain biking, orienteering and expeditions in the local area.

A second laser tag event held at Survival Combat Games saw basic training cadets from Taw and Torridge side undertake a serious of fun and challenging missions — with Torridge side being victorious for a second year.

Speaking of the recent events Lt Jim Harvey said: “There’s always something going on when you choose The ACF as your hobby. It’s a great organisation for young people to build confidence learn new skills make friends and have lots of fun.”
