PLANS to slash opening hours at a recycling centre near Holsworthy could encourage fly tipping, the town's mayor has warned, writes Amelia Chubb.
Opening hours at Anvil Corner recycling centre could be reduced to just two days a week, as Devon County Council continues its campaign to save more than £1.2-million next year.
If the proposal goes ahead, the site would be open on Saturday and Sundays, 10am to 6pm from April to September, and 10am to 4.30pm from October to March, starting from next April.
The site is currently open all week and three members of staff are employed, but redundancies could be made if hours are drastically reduced.
Although the site is managed by recycling and resource management company SITA UK, it has been run by the Pentney family since 1987. Richard Pentney, who is the latest family member to overlook the operation, has set up a petition against the proposal.
