805 Fat Hoggs, 115 Draft Ewes and Rams
Much larger entry with mixed quality on offer a lot of leaner hoggs penned with people selling their tail enders before they start lambing, however a very fast trade was met by all on offer.
The good meat hoggs were very much sought after top being 368ppk for 2 pens 45kgs at £165.50 from Paul Symons of Hopworthy, Pyworthy.
Three vendors at 367ppk, Y Spencer of Putford had 39.2kgs to £144, Richard Gubb of Langtree saw his 38.4kgs to £141 and David Mansfield of Forda Farm, his were 45kgs at £165 and Steve Eastley of Bake, Looe realised 365ppk for 46kgs at £168. 7 other vendors realised between 360ppk to 364ppk.
Top per head on the day for the heavies was £177 from 2 vendors, Mark Walter from Bradworthy, his were 48.8kgs and Graham & Lindy Cowling of Bude were 51kgs.
£176 realised by 3 vendors firstly for 52.6kg from Terrance Olde & Sons of Hartland, 54kgs from Messrs Murrin of Monkokehampton and Rob Johns of Bradworthy 56kgs. Victor & Celia Goaman of Stitworthy topped at £175.50 for 53kgs.
Draft Ewes
A small entry but a flying trade overall average of £138.80. Suffolk x to £167 from John Griggs of Weare Giffard and Texel x to £165 from Danny Norman of Dolton. Mules to £158.
Store Hoggs
Numbers are starting to dry up but the trade is still flying. Top being £163 from Graham & Hazel Butt of Ashbury Court, who also sold pens at £160 and £158.
Couples 70 Ewes and 121 Lambs
Another good entry met a very fast trade.
Doubles to £400 for Suffolk x and Texel x doubles to £375 all sold by Nathan Goaman of Stitworthy, Higher Clovelly and singles to £280 from David Stephens of Liskeard.
Other singles sold to £270 from Danny Norman and £260 was realised for a Dorset with a young lamb at foot from A & L Furse.
412 Calves
A solid entry for the first week of March sold to another booming trade. A large portion of smaller Spring born calves forward, that said, 412 calves still averaged an impressive £473 per head with 18 milk calves over £800 to a top of £920.
Weaned Calves
A line up of weaned calves sold to an eye watering trade, to a top call of £900 (4m) for a single Simmental steer sold by GG Smale & Son of Launceston who had others to £870 and £760 (4m).
Blue steers attained £880 (5m) for RJ & JR Warren, Penzance who sold Angus steers which parted at £780 (5m).
Heifers sold to £810 (6m) for Angus in from Baulch Partnership with more Angus heifers to £790 and £710 (6m) for DE & TA Grigg, Monkleigh.
Milk Calves
A phenomenal days trading with strong Limousin calves hitting a mega £920 in from WG Heal & Son, Bratton Flemming.
Other good Limousins to £845 (x2) for Henscott Barton Ltd, £658 AJ & PE Nancekivell, Kilkhampton with 10 Limousin bulls averaging an impressive £678.
Angus sold well again and returned at £900 for a strong pair sold by Parker & Burnett, Tiverton who had others to £840 and £805 and more to £610 for AJ & PE Nancekivell and £598 D Philip & Son, Looe.
British Blues parted at £880 for Parker and Burnett, £810 BS & AM Martin, Marhamchurch, £785 SEJ Tapp & Son, Tiverton, £765 K & DR Metherell, £760 AJ & JJ Tucker & Son, Stibb Cross, £760 Bradley Farm Partnership, Camelford, £755 J & TE Cann, Highampton and £730 for PF Cleave, Morwenstow.
What a line up of Charolais bulls! A credit to our vendors with 27 averaging £632 to a top of £860 (x2) for CW & AL Wickett, Merton who sold more to £850, others £770 for SEJ Tapp, £735, £705 and £690 for D Philp & Son, £702 for RG, LA, SR & CM Wearing, Tavistock.
Strong Simmental bulls attained £730 RWH Dilling, Highampton with further younger sorts a lively trade and reaching £572 and £520 for J Sillifant, Pancrasweek.
Not too many strong Hereford bulls to report about, but month old types to £550 WA Raffe & Sons, £540 B & N Davey Partnership, Boyton, £535 for CK & HP Merrett, Bradworthy and £470 (12 days old) for Leeson Farming.
Heifers returned at a huge £845 for a premium Limousin for Henscott Barton Ltd, other Limousin heifers to £810 and £615 for AJ & PE Nancekivell followed by the best Charolais heifers reaching £825 for CW & AL Wickett, £812 (x2) for WG Heal & Son, £630, £620 & £615 for D Philp & Son.
Blue heifers also reached £825 for an older sort sold by BS & AM Martin, heifers of a similar stamp to £805 Parker & Burnett with younger sorts to £700 Dave Furse, Ashwater, £700 Henscott Barton Ltd and £635 (x2) for AJ Pomeroy & Sons, East Putford.
An abundance of Hereford heifers forward sold to a top of £800 for an older sort from BS & AM Martin, younger types to £600 WG Heal & Son and £510 B & N Davey Partnership.
Dairy Sired Bulls
24 Friesian bulls sold to a top of £340 for a trio of well farmed sorts from Henscott Barton Ltd.
30 Dairy Cattle
Today’s sale saw a stand-on trade to recent weeks with all qualities forward selling to good demand.
Topping the sale at £3400 was a freshly calved Ayrshire x heifer yielding 38Kgs on behalf of Messrs RJ & JR Warren of Penzance.
Messrs RAS Johns & Partners sold a super pedigree heifer ‘Newrock R2 D2 Peace 322’ at £3150. Other heifers to £2700 for Yeovale Zoadiac Ruth’ on behalf of the Westaway Family of Yeo Vale Farm Ltd.
Cows topped at £2750 for a 2nd calving cow ‘Newrock Gothic Delilah 43 GP83’ on behalf of RAS Johns & Partners with a 3rd calving cow ‘Newrock Virtue Teresa 218 VG88 SP1’ selling at £2400.
Today’s sale also included a consignment of In Milk/In Calf Cows due April onwards from the continuation of the Herd Dispersal on behalf of EV & BK Benney, Helston.
The consignment saw great demand and topped at £2250 for a 3rd calving cow due in May with a 2nd calving cow due May selling to £2100.
A small entry of in calf heifers saw great demand topping at £2000 (x2) for EV & BK Benney & Son.
Yearling heifers saw a similar trade topping at £950 (x3) for Messrs WJ Law & Son of Holsworthy.
480 Store Cattle
An excellent number for our March show and sale with quality in abundance, £2500 was the top today for 2 23mth Charolais from Messrs RH & GA Morrish of Torrington.
A superb run of single suckled Simmentals from Messrs Cornborough Farms raced away to £2490 others to £2440, £2400 & £2340 and other single suckled Charolais from Mr AS May of Week St Mary to £2390 others £2330.
A flying British Blue trade this week many over £2000 strongest to £2200 for 3 21mth steers from Messrs J & ML Chamberlain of Shebbear.
7 well farmed 17mth British Blues from Messrs PJ & SJ Hawking of Highampton at £2190, other 19mth British Blues from Messrs D & E Kirk of Ashwater at £2190(3).
23mth British Blues from Messrs AJ & P May to £2180 & £2180 for a 21mth British Blue from Mr MJ Walter of Bradworthy.
A strong Aberdeen Angus trade topped at £2220 for Mr AS May other well fleshed Aberdeen Angus from Messrs J & ML Chamberlain to £2120 (2) and £2120 was also achieved again for 4 organic Aberdeen Angus steers 21mth from Messrs Fryer Farming of High Bickington.
Hereford steers to £2090 from Mr WH Henderson of Bideford, several bunches of heifers to £2000+ to a top of £2240 for a real meat Hereford from Messrs J & ML Chamberlain and 23mth single suckled Charolais heifers from Messrs RH & GA Morrish to £2230.
A nice run of Simmentals from Messrs Cornborough Farms LTD to £2210(4), £2070(4) & £2040 (2) and Charloais heifers from Messrs J Davey & Son to £2050.
The strongest British Blue heifers to £1930 for Messrs D & E Kirk, others at £1880 for 2 from Messrs JA & RS Mills of Petersmarland.
Native heifers topped at £1980 for 3 from Messrs J & ML Chamberlain others from Mr C Wickett of Stratton to £1800.
Younger Cattle
Another fantastic trade for the quality on offer this week, a run of terrific single suckled Charolais steers 10-11mths from Messrs SR & SM Crocker of Lewdown saw 8 at £1730 and heifers to £1340 (7) also a 19mth single suckled Limousin steer from Mr M Luxton of Week St Mary to £1420.
A cracking run of British Blues topped at £1680 for 7 11mth from Mr J Angell of Holsworthy others to £1530 (4).
Younger 8-10mth British Blues from Messrs Westcott Farm Partnership to £1480 (5) and 8mth steers to £1230 (6).
11-13mth British Blue heifers at £1550 (3) from Mr J Angell also his 8 in the second bunch raced away to £1490 and 10mth British Blue heifers again from Westcott Farm Partnership to £1270(6).
Young Aberdeen Angus in demand £1660 was the top for 5 14mth steers, younger 10mth Aberdeen Angus steer from Mr J Angell to £1460 others from Mr MJ Andrews of Lifton at £1420(2).
13mth Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1400 (6) in from Mr J Angell again who also sold 11mth Hereford heifers to £1480 and in keen demand.
Other young Hereford heifers from Messrs DF & ER James of Halwill also reached £1480.
Cows and Calves
A young Aberdeen Angus cow with her 9mth Hereford steer calf topped at £2550 from Mr J Angell of Holsworthy.
