1006 Fat Hoggs, 170 Draft Ewes and Rams
Much larger entry with again a mixed quality on offer, a lot of leaner hoggs on offer again with several producers selling their last hoggs of the season which reflected in the overall average.
The well fleshed hoggs met a flying trade from start to finish and very much sought after.
Top on the day was 405ppk for a pen of 38kgs at £154 from Geoff May of Astral House, Instow. David Mansfield made 397ppk for his 39kgs to £160.50 and he also sold his 40.4kgs at 397ppk £160.50.
Mike Bellew of Gammaton realised 396ppk for his 45.2kgs £179 and Mike Watkins of Torrington saw his 44kgs achieve 393ppk at £173. 392ppk was seen for a pen of 46kgs to £180.50 again sold by Mike Bellew of Bideford.
Heavies on the day was £185 sold by Victor & Celia Goaman of Stitworthy, Higher Clovelly and £184.50 was met by 50kgs from C & DC Beer of Monkleigh. There was 40 pens of hoggs that realised £180 to £184.
Draft Ewes
Good entry and the trade was on fire and still more could have been sold, overall average of £153.90.
Suffolk x to £203 from Phil Dack of Parkham, Texel x to £203 from M Metherell of Torrington, Polled Dorsets to £191 from Graham Harding of Nutton Farm and Mules to £180.
Store Hoggs
Again all store hoggs in demand, top being £159 from Graham & Hazel Butt of Ashbury Court.
Couples – 74E and 111L
A very fast trade for all couples on offer today, and more could have been sold with more buyers in the alleys.
Doubles topped at £390 from Danny Norman of Dolton, Nathan Goaman sold his best to £380. With further doubles to £375 and £370.
Singles topped out at £270 for a Suffolk x froim J Shipton of Week St Mary. John had further singles at £260.
333 Calves
Weaned Calves
A good quality line-up of weaned calves forward this morning met with a scorching trade for all forward.
Breaking the centre record was a very smart and well farmed dairy bred Charolais bull from Robert Keenor of Lapford who realised a whopping £1000, he also sold Angus heifers at £920 (x2), a smart Blue heifer at £900 and a Charolais heifer at £840.
Best of the Hereford Bulls to £810 for the same farm.
Milk Calves
Another exceptional day with trade even hotter than previous weeks.
Best Blue bulls today at £870 for Steve and Karen Kendall, a price matched by Nick and Kate Bowden of Beaworthy for their best Blue bull.
Both families again reaching £860, also 3 more Blue bulls over £850 with too many to mention at £750 plus!! Best Limousin bulls today to £860 for Rachel Skinner of Beaworthy.
Other Limousin bulls to £710 for the Wearing family of Tavistock. Charolais bulls at £680 for Tracey Rocket of Bridestowe and £645 and £582 was also realised for the Gilbert family of Beaworthy.
Angus bulls quite possibly the trade of the day when the Luxtons of Milton Dameral made £710 and £640 for theirs, the Nickels family of Barnstaple to £630 and the Rocket family made £628 for theirs.
One after another of these young Angus bulls to £520 plus. Hereford bulls to £450 for the Francis family of East Putford, £420 (x2) for the Greenaways of Tetcott.
Best of the British Shorthorn bulls £440 & £390 for Leeson Farming of Launceston. All bull calves today averaged £471.
Heifer calves, well what a trade they were.
Nick and Kate Bowden sold Charolais heifers at £820 and £800, slightly younger types to £560 & £555 (x2) in from LJ Goaman of Hartland. Blue heifers at £810 for a standout calf from Nick and Kate Bowden, they also sold another at £710.
The Leys of Sutcombe sold their best Blue heifer at £670, Wescott Farm Partnership sold their best at £665, then the Leys again at £660 and the Parkhouse family of St Austell made £655. Limousin heifers to £800 for the Wearing family and £780 and £740 for Rachel Skinner again.
Hereford heifers to £600 & £580 (x2) for Colwill & Bellairs of Morwenstow, best of the Angus heifers to £580 & £575 for the Kendall family of Bodmin, £570 (x2) for Rob Veale of Halwill and £540 for the Leys of Sutcombe.
Dairy Sired Bulls
20 Friesian bulls topped at £310 (x5) for Johns family of Bodmin with smaller types to £170 for Leeson Farming of Launceston and £158 for Robert Harris of Winkleigh.
280 Store Cattle
Another good entry of cattle with more quality leaner turnout cattle on offer, trade remained strong throughout the sale with the stronger meat steers again over £2000.
Topping at £2170 for a 23mth Hereford from Messrs GRM Hill of Lamerton, other Herefords from the same farm to £2090.
Continentals topped at £2140 for a 23mth British Blue from Mr RJ Wade of Welcombe, other British Blues from Messrs GRM Hill to £2110 and £2040 for a 20mth British Blue from Messrs H & M Thorne of Warkleigh.
A few Limousins to £2110 for a 19mth steer from Mr James Banbury of Lifton, other 19mth Limousins from Messrs HR Daniel & Son of Torrington at £1990.
Charolais to £2010 for a 21mth steer from Mr SJ Griffin of Ashwater and 3 other 18mth Charolais from Mr PH Reed of Milton Dameral to £2000.
A smaller entry of Aberdeen Angus this week topped at £2080 for 4 at 24mth old from Mr RJ Wade, other Aberdeen Angus from Mr D Walter of Stratton to £1980 & £1800 (5) aswell as others from Mr SO Metherell of Welcombe to £1910 (2).
Very few meat feeding heifers, the best to £1980 for a 26mth British Blue from RJ Wade. Younger Charolais heifers 18mths from Mr SJ Griffin to £1840 and 2 others at £1710.
Young 19mth Limousin heifers from Mr James Banbury to £1770 others from Messrs DJ & ML Challacombe at £1710 (3) and Native heifers to £1780 for a Welsh Black & British Shorthorn from Mr D Walter of Stratton.
Few Friesian steers topped at £1600 selling well for 7 21mth steers in store condition from Messrs HR Daniel & Son.
Younger Cattle
Quality again sold to a premiuim this week, a second consignment of well farmed 13mth British Blues from Mr PJ Hawking of Highampton raced away to £1910 others at £1790(6) & £1850 (6) also Limousins and British Blues to £1870 again 13mth.
Younger 9-10mths British Blues from Mr J Angell of Holsworthy sold well at £1500 (3) & £1490(3).
A run of young 10mth single suckled Charolais from Messrs SR & SM Crocker of Lewdown to £1640 (4) & £1570 (5) and heifers to £1400.
Other young 7mth Stabiliser steers from mr SH Arnold of Monkokehampton at £1260 (4) and young natives sold well with 2 14mth steers from Messrs DF & ER James to £1580 whose heifers also sold well at £1430.
Younger 11mth hereford from Mr J Angell to £1440 (4) and Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1300 (4).
Grazing Cows
£1710 was the top for a 2022 British Blue cow from Mr J Clark of Ashwater.
Finished Cattle
323ppk was the top for a Simmentsl steer (now FA) from Mr MW Bridgman of Jacobstow whose 644kilo Simmental heifer made 320ppk.
