743 New Season Lambs, 355 Draft Ewes and Rams
Larger entry met a sharper trade due to an uplift in the export and Qurbani trade.
It was noticable there were alot of lambs handling on the leaner side which pulled the average back, but the good meat lambs were in keen demand. Top per kilo on the day was 347p for 3 pens of 42.2kg at £147 from the Stephen family of Burscott, Holsworthy.
Mike Hill of Bideford saw his 44.4kgs achieve 345p at £153 and Mike Watkins of Torrington realised 344p for 2 pens of 43kgs at £148. Several pens of lambs around £155 to a top of £159 from LJ Luxton & Son of Venn, Milton Dameral.
Draft Ewes
Much larger entry with again a lot of plain and ¾ meat ewes on offer which met a very fast trade from start to finish, ¾ meat Texel x ewes,to £178 from Phil Dack of Parkham, Suffolk x ewes to £177 from Ryan Thomas of Kilkhampton and ¾ meat Charollais x ewes to £171 from Derek Broad of Dutson Launceston.
Polled Dorset ewes to £171 from Messrs Knapman of North Tawton. Mules to £168 from P Littlejohns & Son of Shears Farm, Morwenstow.
146 Hoggs
Good entry and a faster trade.Top per kilo being 300p for 41kgs at £123 and heavy hoggs to £149 all sold by King & Partner of East Pynn, Iddesleigh.
328 Calves & Weaned Calves
Strong numbers for the first week of June and trade remains sky high. All Calves sold in May 2024 average £261, all calves sold in May 2025 average £461. So, trade is incredible compared to the previous year, keep the calves coming.
Weaned Calves
The beef and store trade seeing resistance, but the weaned calves certainly haven’t, with all weaned calves selling to a flyer Top this week went to a British Blue heifer at £800 for J Irish, Newton St Petrock. British Blue steers to £755 (x2) for O Cobblestone, Holsworthy.
A great consignment from Diepenbroek Farms, Seaton selling Hereford heifers to £740 (x2), Aberdeen Angus steers to £720 (x2), Aberdeen Angus heifers to £650 (x2). Hereford steers to £650 again for J Irish and Devon steers to £600 (x4) for JR & A Down, Whiddon Down.
Milk Calves
An outstanding British Blue bull to £788 for MR & KL Cleave & Son, Bude other crackers to £770, £730, £710 for NJ & KC Bowden, Highampton, £680 for NJ & KC Bowden, Highampton and £660 for ST & EE Nickels, Barnstaple.
Sweet, well put together Charolais bulls to £735, £640 for RG & LA & SR Wearing, Tavistock, £630, £600 for LJ Goaman & Sons, Hartland, £575 and £572 for JLC Farms, Launceston. Limousin bulls to £715, £595 for AJ & PE Nancekivell again and £482 for JR Frayne, Launceston.
Aberdeen Angus bulls to £600 three times for two different vendors JH & SM Dark & Sons, Helston and AJ & PE Nancekivell, Kilkhampton, more for Mr Dark to £592 and £590 for John George, Buckland Brewer.
Hereford bulls to £575, £560 for WJ & CC Bond, Buckland Brewer, £550 for I Irish again and £535 for GD & KE Kitto, Lamellion. British Blue heifers to £645, £635, £620 for NJ & KC Bowden again and £622 for John George again.
Charolais heifers to £600, £580 for J Irish again and £550, £460, for LJ Goaman & Sons. Limousin heifers to £600, £575 for AJ & PE Nancekivell again, £465, £460 for LJ Goaman & Sons again. Aberdeen Angus heifers to £498, £495 for JH & SM Dark & Sons again and £355 for GR & TG Bond, Langtree.
Hereford heifers to £470, £460, £455, £450 and £445 for WJ & CC Bond again and £440, £425 for J Irish again. Devon heifers to £460 and £375 for IM Mitchell, St Winnow.
Dairy Sired Bulls
Lots of older Friesian bulls around today selling well at £460 (x2) for JR & A Down, Whiddon Down, £412 (x8) for A Cann, Beaworthy.
With younger ones selling to a harder trade to £185 for JG & S Endacott, Halwill, with processing calves ranging between £80-£138.
130 Store Cattle
Numbers everywhere seem to be tighter now although the cattle on offer sold to a strong trade with plenty of buyers around the ring with several leaving empty handed.
£2180 was the top for two 27mth Herefords from Messrs Lewis Dennis Partnership of Barnstaple who sold other fleshier types at £2010 & £1980.
A cracking run of younger 12-17mth cattle from Mr J Irish of Newton St Petrock topped at £1820 for a 17mth British Blue and other British Blues from Messrs HF Chubb & Son of Tetcott sold to £1900, & Mr J Irish again at £1890 for a 16mth British Blue.
Whilst a well presented fleshed 16mth Charolais from Messrs DF & ER James of Halwill sold to £1860. Younger 14-16mth Herefords from Mr J Irish of Newton St Petrock to £1910. Aberdeen Angus from Messrs H&M Thorne & Sons of Umberleigh to £1880.
Fleshed heifers sold extremely well considering the decline in the finished price, topping at £1970 for a 22mth British Blue from Messrs HF Chubb & Son of Tetcott who sold 2 British Blues well at £1870, 20mths.
Other British Blues from MW DM & WM Jenkin of Callington to £1600 (3). Younger grass Continentals saw plenty £1500+.
Younger Store Cattle
The younger stores remained strong considering the first flush of grass has gone.
£1650 was the top for a 14mth British Blue from Mr J Irish of Newton St Petrock who sold 8-10mth British Blues at £1250 and 10mth British Blues at £1020.
British Blue heifers 10-12mth to £1250 (3) & £1020 & Charolais heifers from the same farm at £1410. British Blue heifers from Messrs DF & ER James of Halwill to £1530 who sold Hereford heifers at £1340.
OTM Weighing Cows
A flyer for the few on offer. Top price per kilo was 284p for a 608 kilo Devon cow from Messrs T & A Mawtus of Clawton at £1726.
Foreign Holstein cows from Messrs NJ & KC Bowden sold extremely well 240p the top for an 800 kilo cow at £1920 with other foreign cows at 208p from the same farm.
15 Dairy Cattle
A small entry for today’s dairy sale a strong trade for all types forward.
Top of the day was £2750 given for Glendene Mahogany 72 a freshly calved heifer sold yielding 30kg on behalf of Messrs H Burrows and Sons, Woolacombe. The same good vendor sold another freshly calved heifer Glendene Rachel 43 at £2650.
The George Family of Buckland Brewer sold a nice run of fresh calved heifers topping at £2400 for Cabbacott Harley P Voilet sold yielding 33kg.
Further heifers from the same vendors topped at £2350 for Cabbacott Elevated coral sold yielding 36kg. Just one singular cow selling to £2200 on behalf of the Parsons Family, Pyworthy.
