488 Fat Hoggs, 87 Draft Ewes and Rams

Smaller entry and a flying trade for all weights with 5 buyers in attendance and a lot more could have been sold. Overall average of 361.2ppk.

Pen after pen over 370ppk to a top of 391ppk for a pen of light hoggs from Messrs Hunkin & Daughter of Petrockstowe who also realised 387ppk for their second pen.

Followed by 2 vendors at 376ppk RA & D Cleave of Woolsery had 42.5kgs to £170 and Binworthy Farms of Petrockstow 44.4kgs to £167. Karl Heard of Stratton saw his 40kgs realise 375ppk and £150 and 5 other vendors at 374ppk.

Top per head on the day was £175.50 from 2 vendors, Margaret Dennis of Boyton 52.2kgs and Victor & Celia Goaman, Stitworthy who also realised £175 for 2 other pens.

Draft Ewes

A much faster trade from start to finish averaging £136 a head. Suffolk x topped the day at £188 from Karl Heard of Stratton and Texel x to £178 from C Drummond of Inwardleigh. Mules to £168.

121 Store Hoggs

A very fast trade for all, Suffolk x topped the day at £163 from Graham & Hazel Butt of Ashbury Court who also realised £158 for their second pen.

Couples 60 Ewes and 102 Lambs

Larger entry and a very fast trade and still more could have been sold, overall average per life being £115.

Doubles to £380 from 2 vendors, Ross Millman of Kennerland for a Dorset x and Nathan Goaman of Stitworthy for 2 pens of Suffolk x who also had further doubles with younger lambs at foot to £370. Singles topped at £270 for Suffolk x ewes which were also sold by Nathan Goaman.

386 Calves

A larger entry of rearing calves than anticipated and sold to a continued high demand with some outstanding returns achieved with a third of the entry selling beyond £500.

Weaned Calves

A much smaller entry but some big prices achieved being £800 for a young single British Blue steer in from Geoff Endacott, Halwill, who sold a British Blue heifer the same money and a Friesian steer to £740.

Milk Calves

Top price this week peaked at £860 for the best of the British Blue bulls sold by O Petherick & Son, Kilkhampton who sold a further pair to £830 more rose to £810 for A & D Heyward, Coryton, £790 (x3) for CL Stevens, Woolsery and NJ & KC Bowden, Highampton who had more to £785.

Premium Charolais bulls parted at £810 for NJ & KC Bowden again, others achieved £690 & £650 for BD & DG Andrew, Shebbear, £595 LJ Goaman & Son, Hartland and £580 for some very young sorts for both Robert Harris of Winkleigh and David Renfree, Liskeard.

Aberdeen Angus bulls saw huge demand again and returned at £760, £700 (x3), £680(x2) for Ranches Ltd, Okehampton, £570 (x3) for SG & MR Ley, Sutcombe and £562 for TN & M Morrow, Ladock.

Limousin bulls to £620, £570 for DW & GN Renfree, Liskeard and £550 for TN & M Morrow, Ladock. Hereford bulls to £600 for Bradley Farm Partnership, Hallworthy, £580 for RWH Dilling, Highampton, £540 twice for ARP Farming, Pancrasweek and IM Mitchell, Lostwithiel.

Eye catching heifers to £700 for British Blues for both A & D Heyward again and O Petherick & Son, others away at £685 for CL Stevens, Woolsery, £675 (x2) for IM Marshall & Sons, Rock, £670 again for CL Stevens and A & D Heyward.

Aberdeen Angus heifers soared up to £680 and £670 for both Ranches Ltd, £660 for LJ Goaman, £610 ME & IE Vanstone & Sons, £605 for a pair from NJ & KC Bowden, with all Angus heifers averaging £436 with a large portion being young fortnight old Spring born calves.

Hereford heifers up to £640 for a pair in from CL Stevens who sold another pair at £595 more at £600 to IM Mitchell, £435 for TA & SJ Kempthorne and £432 for GRM Hill. Best Charolais heifers to £600 for some smart types in from GRM Hill again who sold more to £550 and £540 twice.

Young Simmental heifers to £425 and £420 for G & C Jones & Partners, Winkleigh. Limousin heifers to £415 for DW & GN Renfree, Liskeard and £400 (x2) for G & C Jones & Partners.

Dairy Sired Bulls

Plenty of smaller Friesian type around today which sold to a varied trade and reached £200 for a decent pair of fortnight old Freisian bulls in from Leeson Farming Partnership.

170 Store Cattle

A reasonable entry prior to our March show and sale saw another large crowd of buyers. Most stronger meat steers at £2000 and topping at £2280 for a 29mth Devon from Mr J Norman of Dolton who sold Herefords at £2140.

Several stronger fleshed Aberdeen Angus sold well, 2 29mth steers (non-FA) from Mr SD Metherell of Welcombe to £2240 and 3 20mth Aberdeen Angus steers from Mr RJ Wade of Welcombe hit £2200 others to £2150.

A nice bunch of 4 compact organic farm assured steers from Messrs Fryer Farming of High Bickington to £2060 (22mth) other natives from Messrs RL & S Jordan of Lifton to £2000 for a 22mth British Shorthorn.

British Blues in short supply this week topping at £2170 for 2 23mth steers from Messrs RH & GA Morrish of St Giles and younger 16mth Simmental steers from Mr O Copplestone of Derril sold well at £2050.

Heifers topped at £2010 for 3 23mth British Blues from Messrs RH & GA Morrish again, other British Blues from Mr DJ Challacombe of Winkleigh to £1800 and a 17mth Simmental heifer from O Copplestone to £1880.

Native heifers topped at £1990 for a 31mth heifer from Mr J Norman and Aberdeen Angus heifers from Mr RJ Wade of Welcombe to £1840.

Younger Cattle

Huge interest and demand this week, 2 cracking 11mth Aberdeen Angus steers from Mr NW Forfitt of Shebbear raced away to £1770 with the second bunch at £1680 (4) other young Aberdeen Angus from Messrs C Brooking & Son of Northlew to £1510(4).

Young 10-12mth continentals saw a good run from Miss C Crocker of Lewdown with British Blue steers to £1230 & heifers to £1100.

Younger 7 & 8mth single suckled Limousins from Mr M Luxton of Marhamchurch saw steers to £1280 & heifers to £1140.

A run of shapley 8mth single suckled bulls from Messrs Curtis Partners of Shebbear saw Limousins to £1580 and Blonde D’Aquitaines to £1380 also British Blue heifers from the same farm to £1480.

Grazing Cattle

A 34mth non-farm assured shapley Limousin heifer from Mr M Luxton of Marhamchurch realised £1710.
