539 New Season Lambs, 177 Draft Ewes and Rams

Similar entry and again a very strong trade for all good meat lambs where more could have been sold.

Top per kilo was 365ppk for a smart pen of Texel x 46kgs at £168 from Graham & Lindy Cowling of Kings Hill Bude. Followed by the Bromell Family of Worden Park, Bradworthy who realised 361ppk for 45kgs at £162.50.

Rob Harris of Putford saw his 44kgs achieve 359ppk for 2 pens at £158. Top per head on the day was £181 for a pen of heavies from EC Stanbury & Son of Norleigh Barton Inwardleigh. 9 other pens between £170 & £175.

Draft Ewes

Larger entry but again a shortage of good meat ewes with again large number of plain ewes on offer. The well fleshed ewes sold to a premium.

Mules topped the day at £179 from P Littlejohns & Son of Morwenstow and Charollais x to £172 from the Stephen Family of Burscott Holsworthy. Texel x ewes from King & Partners topped at £169 and Highlanders to £166 from Colin Goaman of Hartland.

Store Lambs

Smaller entry due to the dry weather but still a very strong trade. Top being £136 from Kevin Hilborn of Tavistock who realised £131 for his 2nd pen.

472 Calves and Weaned Calves

A huge entry of 472 calves penned and trade turned a corner with some calves up £100 on last weeks sale. A fantastic trade for both, rearing calves & weaned calves.

Weaned Calves

Big numbers and a big trade with 126 weaned calves from Pryor Dairying LTD of Carnmenellis sold to a sensational trade with their best bunch of 5-month-old Hereford steers reaching £845 & £825, Blues to £840, Angus to £790 x9 at the same young age.

Other Blue steers to £800 (5m) in from RHJ Dairy LTD, Pancrasweek. Heifers topped out at £810 for Blues from Pryor Dairying who sold Hereford heifers well to £750 and Angus to £700. Blue heifers from RHJ Dairy achieved £745. A big entry and a flying trade.

Milk Calves

As expected, plenty of young calves around and the milk calf trade took a lift today with many more buyers ringside looking to source bunches of calves.

Best Blue bulls up to £820 x2 & £805 presented by O Petherick, Kilkhampton, more to £705 RC & T Martin, Torrington, £640 Denning Trewithen LTD, Truro and £638 TJ & BE Cowley & Son of Ashwater. A wonderful Charolais bull soared to £695 for the Wearing Family of Tavistock who sold another belter to £625 - a credit to them.

More Charolais bulls to £600 in from LJ Goaman, Hartland. Best Limousin bulls reaching £730 for JH Bolt, Downinney who sold more to £680 x3 followed by Olly Murrian making £670 of his.

A group of Angus bulls made £650 sold by R Risdon, Camelford with other to £580 for younger sorts in from AJ & PE Nancekivell, Kilkhampton with 38 Angus bulls averaging well at £427. Hereford bulls to £570 for RC & T Martin, £550 Diepenbrook Farms LTD, Seaton and £460 S & J Cook, Barnstaple.

Heifers made £700 for a super Limousin in from RC & T Martin again with more to £700 for AS Brenton, St Keyne with younger types to £530 JH Bolt. Best Blue heifers to £620 for TP & JH Isaac, Hollacombe, other sweet heifers to £600 Alan Tucker, Stibb Cross and £560 for LJ & LE Luxton Milton Damerel.

Well-shaped Charolais heifers topped at £570 for both BD & DG Andrew, Shebbear and for Nick and Kate Bowden with plenty others over to £500 mark. Angus heifers to £530 for another group from R Risdon, others to £500 B & N Davey, Boytonn and £430 Rob Veale, Halwill.

Good Hereford heifers sold well to £450 for RC & T Martin, others to £410 for R Poole, Milton Damerel and £380 for GD & KE Kitto, Lamellion.

Only the one Simmental heifer in the mix today and it sold well at £510 for Olly Murrian again. A run of Longhorn heifers up from Truro for the Dennings sold to £335 and £300 x3.

Dairy Sired Bulls

16 frisians sold well and averaged £172 to a top of £370 for R Poole, and £250 for V and M Brown, Buckland Brewer. A single Fleckvieh bull to £205 for R Poole again.

235 Store Cattle

Another good entry with a good crowd of buyers and the trade very similar to previous weeks.

Best of the forward meat types topped at £2350 for two outstanding Hereford x Friesian steers 23mths from Messrs J & ML Chamberlain of Shebbear who also sold Aberdeen Angus 23mth at £2300 with others at £2190.

Two well fed British Blues from Messrs PRT & M Balsdon of Beaworthy sold well at £2300 with plenty of others at £1900 and four well fleshed Aberdeen Angus heifers again from Messrs J & ML Chamberlain of Shebbear sold well at £1990.

Other native heifers to £1710 for a 16mth heifer with condition £1710 from Mr R M Eddy of Penzance, 2 South Devon heifers achieved £1670 and were in from Mr PJ Martin of Buckland Filleigh.

Several grazing type store Blue heifers 16-20mths sold well to £1610 for three in from Messrs GR & AE Pomeroy, Bradworthy. Other younger British Blues from Mr S W Graham of Bude saw £1480 & £1470, some of the best Friesian steers seen for a long time.

A run of 47 20-29mth steers from Messrs Loatmead Dairy Farming LTD topped at £1970 others at £1650 (5) & £1630 (7). Three well fed Friesians from Messrs J & ML Chamberlain of Shebbear at £1880 and five Friesians from Messrs G Daniel & Son of North Tamerton at £1740 (5).

Younger Stores

A nice run from Messrs Loatmead Dairy Ltd of Bradworthy saw British Blues to £1340 (5) others at £1200 (7) and British Blue heifers from the same farm at £1240 (7) £1080 (5).

Aberdeen Angus steers at £1270 (5) & Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1130 (7).

A nice run of young S.S Aberdeen Angus steers & heifers from Messrs Holland Farmers of Tavistock saw a cracking bunch of eight at £1180, heifers from the same farm to £1150.

OTM Cows

Top was 235ppk for a Devon Cow from Mr AJ Roberts of Shebbear at £1715.

35 Dairy Cattle

A smaller entry for today’s dairy sale, saw another strong trade.

Freshly calved heifers saw a top of £4000 for a superb fresh calved heifer yielding 33Kgs ‘Westtown Lizzie 65’ on behalf of Steve Davey & Partners of Woolsery. Yeo Vale Farm Ltd of Bideford sold fresh heifers from their pedigree herd to £3400 and £3000.

Regular vendors Messrs H Burrows & Sons from Woolacombe topped at £3150 for ‘Glendene Madge 84’ yielding 33Kgs. Cows topped at £3100 for ‘Westtown Jenny 27’ a 2nd calving cow on behalf of Steve Davey & Partners with PD & SK Blake realising £3050 for a 3rd calving cow ‘Whistand 4177 Rever Laura GP82’.

Jack Wyatt of Wooalcombe commenced his dispersal topping at £3050 for a freshly calved cow. The sale also included a consignment of Holstein Friesian X & Norwegian Red X In Milk/In Calf Cows due in the autumn on behalf of Weavian Farms of Bideford.

The consignment topped at £2300 for a 1st calving heifer due November to AA with others selling to £1950 (x3) and £1900. An in-calf heifer due November realised £1650 from the same vendors.
