576 New Season Lambs, 205 Draft Ewes and Rams

Similar entry met a faster trade which has been seen throughout the country with lambs due to the dry weather and lack of grass and not being fed.

Lambs are also not killing out as well. The good meat lambs sold to a top of 335ppk for a pen of 44kgs at £147.50 from Ryan Thomas of Kilkhampton.

Followed by 332ppk from Graham & Lindy Cowling of Bude for their 47kgs at £156. Top on the day was £156.50 for two pens from L Bolt & R Moore of Torrington and 1 pen from Graham & Lindy Cowling of Bude.

Draft Ewes

Larger entry on the whole with a lot of plain ewes on offer. The good meat ewes sold to a top of £175 for Charollais x from Alan Marshall of Chilsworthy.

Texel x ewes to £167 from Graham & Lindy Cowling of Bude and Suffolk x to £157 and Mules to £155 both sold by Peter Hobbs of Kilkhampton.

308 Store Lambs

Good entry and a stronger trade. Top being £121 for Suffolk x shorn lambs from Peter Jones of Bratton Clovelly, several other pens at £114 to £119.

475 Calves and Weaned Calves

Big numbers of calves starting to come about with 475 penned and sold. Trade would have been firmer than last week with Blue & Native bulls looking very well sold.

Weaned Calves

Top of the day in this section was £760 given for a 6-month-old Blue steer in from RG Amor and Sons travelling down from Yeovil.

Younger Blue steers reached £645 (4m) in from RHJ Dairy LTD, Pancrasweek. A pair of well grown Angus steers attained £740 for Yeo vale farm LTD, Bideford, more to £640 (5m) for Colin Nankervis, St Ives. Blue heifers made £650 for a smart sort in from RG Amor again.

Milk Calves

Trade firmer for all breeds and sizes today, no huge crowd of buyers but the buyers forward were there to source sizable numbers.

£740 was made for the best of some smart Blue bulls in from WJ Hobbs, Morwenstow followed by PH Collins, Holsworthy making £730 and £700 x2 for theirs, £660 Philip Harris, Bodmin, £650 RWH Dilling, Highhampton and £640 for RW Partridge, Morchard Bishop.

Best limousine bulls to £615 for WJ Hobbs, with others to £550 for Jenny Hookway, Winkleigh. Charolais bulls to £550 PH Collins, other £475 for Martin Dairy LTD, St Maybyn who sold Angus bulls well at £468 and £455.

Hereford bulls saw plenty of interest and reached £665 for sold older sorts in for RW Partridge again, youngers sorts to £502 for PM & JE Kitto of Looe.

Longhorn bulls to £342 for RG Denning and sons, Truro. A very smart Blue heifer made £700 for RW Partridge and also PJ Yendell, Crediton with 74 Blue heifers averaging £372.

Best Simmental heifers to £500 for RWH Dilling, Charolais heifers to £400 for Robert Harris and family of Winkleigh others £372 for LJ Goaman, Hartland.

Smart Limousin heifers £500 for Jeff Endacott, Halwill. Well put together Hereford heifers to £540 for RW Partridge and PJ Yendell, more to £390 for P & S Harris.

Dairy Sired Bulls

Strong numbers of Friesian bulls which topped at £420 for a strong single in from JR & A Down of Whiddon Down with all Friesians averaging £99.

250 Store Cattle

A large crowd of buyers around the ring with plenty of after grass released last week the trade was strong throughout the sale.

Top this week was £1990 for 2 23mth British Blue steers from Messrs G Daniel & Son of North Tamerton. 5 other 24mth British Blue steers from RJ Cole of South Molton saw £1950.

Natives in demand topping at £1960 for 2 18mth Aberdeen Angus from Messrs WJ Wooldridge & Son of East Putford who sold other 18mth Aberdeen Angus at £1740 & 19mth British Shorthorn steers from Messrs DI & ML Wootton from Chulmleigh at £1600.

Best of the meat heifers topped at £1910 for 2 25mth British Blues from Messrs G Daniel & Son of North Tamerton whose Limousin heifers hit £1900. Stronger grazing heifers saw 5 20mth British Blues from Mr SW Graham of Marhamchurch at £1780.

Native heifers topping £1780 for three Aberdeen Angus from Messrs WJ Wooldridge & Son of East Putford & Herefords topping at £1690 from Messrs KJ Waldron & Partners of Umberleigh.

Younger Stores

A larger entry drew buyers from long distances.

A cracking run of 14mth steers from Messrs DF & ER James from Halwill who saw four Charolais at £1600 and British Blues to £1590.

A large run of well farmed steers from Messrs DI & ML Wootton of Ashreigney who saw Herefords to £1540 and £1500, British Blues to £1460 (6) & Limousins to £1460 (2).

Younger 10mth British Blues from Messrs Farwood Barton Partnership of Colyton who saw steers selling well at £1160(7) £1150 (6) and £1120 (5) they also saw their 8 10mth British Blue heifers at £1020.

Breeding Cows

A dispersal from Mr C Nankervis of Helston saw great support for this native sale with a large number of buyers from Penzance to Cheshire.

Top being £1660 for a British Shorthorn cow with her steer calf. A Blue Albion cow with her heifer calf at £1620 other British Shorthorn cows with cows & calves at foot to £1600 and Blue Albion cows & calves at £1340-£1500.

A British Shorthorn Bull from the same dispersal to £1980 and a young Galloway bull from Mr BW Carr of Brighton to £1340.

Other Weighing Cows

Top today was 306ppk for a well finnished Devon cow from Mr JA Slee of Buckland Brewer to £2212 who sold other 299ppk at £2117.

99 Dairy Cattle

The sale saw another fast trade from start to finish with a packed ring of full of buyers.

A short entry of fresh heifers sold to another brisk trade topping at £3,300 for “Yeovale Citizen Nanette” sold on behalf of Yeo Vale Farm Ltd. Mark Hammett of Wadebridge sold a smart pedigree heifer “Willsbro Tropic Aneeda 4864” at £3,000.

Two tremendous quality Charolais bulls sold to a fantastic trade topping at £4,100 for “Jacobstow Ulex” with another “Jacobstow Valerian” realising £3,700 both selling on behalf of Marlbrook Partners. In calf heifers flew away to £2,900 with another at £2,700 for two non-pedigree heifers both due in September selling on behalf of KJ Waldon & Partners.

The main feature of the sale was the herd dispersal on behalf of IR & JA Johns of Launcells, Bude. This genuine dispersal attracted buyers from across the country resulting in a fantastic trade from start to finish.

Top of the day was a red and white 1st calving heifer who sold due in January and realised £3,550gns (£3728). Further heifers topped at £3200gns (£3316) on two occasions, with others at £3,000gns (£3150) on three occasions.

Cows saw an equally rapid trade topping at £2900gns (£3045) for a 2nd calving Montbeliarde x cow freshly calved in June with another at £2750gns (£2888) this time for a 3rd calving cow due in October.

Dry cows rose to £3100gns (£3255) with others to £2750gns (£2888). The milking and dry portion of the herd averaged a very credible £2250 all in.
