WHITEWATER Contemporary’s art gallery in Polzeath is presenting a new solo exhibition by landscape painter Stewart Edmondson.

The collection, which opens on July 19 until August 13, includes spectacular watercolour and mixed media works inspired by Cornwall’s dramatically beautiful north coast, alongside a series of large-scale wave paintings, and works that respond to the tranquil woodlands of Dartmoor and waters arounds the upper Dart estuary.

Stewart trained originally as a landscape architect before discovering painting as a way of expressing his passion for the natural world. In 2002 Stewart took the brave decision to embrace his desire to paint and began his journey to being a full time artist.

Now a full time artist and keen environmentalist, he creates his artworks 'en plein air', letting spontaneity and unpredictability direct his process, later refining and completing each image in his studio.

Often camping with his painting kit out in the woods or setting his canvas out on moors and clifftops in all kinds of weather, he lets shifting light patterns and natural forms inspire his use of colour and texture, whilst allowing the physical effects of sun, rain and wind affect the surface details of his paintings.

His large scale mixed media and watercolour paintings feature in fine art collections around the world. The artist will be on hand to welcome visitors and to discuss his work at the exhibition preview on Friday, July 18.

The gallery at Whitewater Contemporary specialises in painting, sculpture, applied art, photography, ceramics and craft by Cornwall and the UK’s leading contemporary artists.

Throughout the year, their exhibition space hosts collections by talented artists and makers, alongside a regular featured artist series of solo exhibitions, on show monthly from March to December.
