A MULTI-storey car park in Launceston, which was forced to close after a car reportedly drove into one of its supporting pillars, has finally reopened.

Back in May, Launceston Town council was forced to close its car based on West Gate Street after its supports were damaged in a collision.

A police report detailed the incident.

A spokesperson from Devon and Cornwall Police explained: “On Monday, May 5, police were called at around 8.15pm following a report of a car colliding with a pillar in the West Gate Street car park in Launceston.

“Following the incident, the driver was taken to hospital for treatment, having sustained minor injuries.”

During the crash, a parked car also sustained moderate damage.

Following this, a spokesperson for the council announced that the facilities would be closing for the foreseeable future. They said: “Due to a vehicle collision causing damage to the multi-story car park the site will be closed until a structural survey is undertaken. We apologise for any inconvenience.”

Over the last few months, repairs have been underway. During that time, a small section of the car park was reopened by the council to allow for some parking.

Now, two months on, the council has finally announced that the site is able to reopen to its full capacity, with repairs now fully completed.

A Launceston Town Council spokesperson said: “Repairs to the damaged structural beam have now been completed within the multi storey car park. Structural engineers have confirmed with their calculations that the concrete will be cured to its full capacity this Sunday (July 20).

“On Monday (July 21) morning the council’s grounds staff will be removing the fence panels therefore meaning the site will be back to its full capacity.”
