ORGANISERS of the Clawton VE Day events to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of war in Europe have hailed it as a success.

The community packed the Clawton Parish Hall to celebrate the event, with the hall decorated with bunting, flowers and flags accompanied by Holsworthy 44, accessories as well as wartime memorabilia and artefacts.

The event was funded by Clawton Parish Council, with the event well received with those in attendance.

A spokesperson for the organisers said: “On Bank Holiday Monday we held our VE Day celebration event at Clawton Parish Hall.

“To greet the community were six members of Holsworthy 44 and their four jeeps, parked up outside. Everyone was in uniform and equipped with various wartime accessories. They even had an air raid siren, which sounded at 3.30pm to start the celebrations.

“The hall was decorated with bunting, flowers and flags, tables were laid up in street party style with vintage china and there were two artifact areas with wartime memorabilia, including newspapers from VE Day. Uniforms, books, glasses, a gas mask and much more was on display for all to see. Wartime music was playing throughout the afternoon which evoked memories.

“The parish hall committee were all dressed in 1940’s outfits and served a homemade afternoon tea, which included sandwiches, sausage rolls and scones. Beer was available in half pints and there was also plenty of tea!

“Celebration cakes were cut by Ann and Steve Goodspeed from the village who were dressed in forties costumes.

“We served over 90 people, who stayed and chatted and shared memories.

“Bringing the community together is what Clawton does best!

“A huge thank you to Holsworthy 44, everyone who helped in any way, grateful thanks to Clawton Parish Council for funding the event and to the Clawton community for making it a successful afternoon.”
