A YOUNG man from Bude has raised more than £1,000 for charity in memory of a family friend.
Despite being only nine years old, Ethan Rice has managed to raise a huge sum for a national cancer charity by signing up for Race for Life 2025.
Each year, thousands of people across the country tie their running shoes and don their racer bib before taking to the course to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
On July 20, Ethan will be among those who are taking on the challenge, running as part of the Plymouth event in memory of a close friend, Jon Short, who recently passed away following a battle with cancer.
Jon was a big supporter of one of Ethan’s hobbies - drumming. Following Jon’s passing, Ethan decided to raise money for charity, having being inspired to complete the run after his football coach took on the 2025 London Marathon for another good cause.
To date Ethan has raised more than £1,000 for Cancer Research UK.
Cancer Research UK has helped double cancer survival in the UK in the last 50 years. Though, despite this incredible progress, its work continues, as nearly one in two people will get cancer within their lifetime.
However, thanks to the work of people like Ethan, the charity is able to carry out world-class research into the prevention, detection and treatment of more than 200 types of cancer.
Ethan will have a team of supporters, including his extremely proud parents, cheering him on as he takes to the course on Sunday, July 20. However, only one month away from his big run, he is hoping to raise even more money in memory of his friend.
