A BUDE councillor is celebrating his part in tackling the county’s temporary housing crisis.
Peter La Broy, Cornwall councillor for Bude, and Cornwall Council’s portfolio holder for housing, has praised news of the progress being made by the council in supporting families living in temporary accommodation across the county.
This week it was revealed that there are now no families that have been living in temporary accommodation for more than six week, a statistic which Cllr La Broy has expressed his pride at.
Speaking on the matter, he said: “When we’re dealing at Cornwall Council, with people that lose their homes, its a real tragedy every single time that somebody is made homeless, but more especially for families, and especially families with young children.
“I can’t begin to imagine how unsettling and worrying it must be to be without a permanent home and growing up, especially if you’re going to school, not having a home to go to, not being able to cook with your parents, not being able to have regular meals, [not having] basic facilities must be just awful.
“So, I was really, really pleased to find out and be told just yesterday, that one of our measures that we measure ourselves with a Cornwall Council, and that is children or families in temporary accommodation - that’s bed and breakfast type accommodation - for over a period of six weeks has been reduced now to zero.
“We have no children in families in bed and breakfast accommodation. It is now zero.
“[I am] really pleased with that because its going to make a huge difference to those families’ experiences and children’s experiences growing up.
“To reflect on that, just two years ago, there were over 50 families in that position that had been over six weeks in bed and breakfast accommodation, so it’s something I am really proud of.”
