The counter-petition, calling for the American fast-food chain to continue with its plans to come to the North Cornwall towns of Bude and Stratton comes after a previous petition against the proposals, started by a local NHS worker previously received more than 1,000 signatures.
In the new petition, started by Kaz Woodhouse, it is stated: “A new McDonald's restaurant would create numerous job opportunities, vital for boosting employment in our community. According to economic studies, the arrival of a McDonald's can lead to the creation of dozens of direct and indirect jobs, contributing positively to local livelihoods.
“Moreover, a local McDonald's could become a social hub, a place where parents can bring their children for a treat, where friends can hang out and enjoy a meal together, and where tourists visiting our beautiful coastal town can find a familiar dining option.
“Fast food options in Bude are limited, and a McDonald's would offer a diverse menu that caters to different tastes and dietary preferences. McDonald's is known for its adaptability to local cultural expectations — we can ensure it offers healthier options and aligns with our community's values.”
However, petitions may not be enough to influence the decision on the site presently the subject of the application, after Cornwall Council told the applicant in a pre-application planning response that the site’s proximity to Budehaven School could see it fall foul of planning rules which state that fast food takeaways will not be granted planning permission if within walking distance of a school or place catering for children.
