THE summer season at Launceston Tennis Club came to a close with a great day of competition at the finals of the club championships.

With the men’s doubles delayed due to a holiday, first up was the ladies which proved to be a very competitive affair. Ruth Cornish and Yan Zhang took the first set before Suzanne Cole and Mary Shanks made it all square. The ladies then opted for a match tie-break - with the latter duo taking the honours.

The singles finals then followed. Both matches were a repeat of last year with Sam Tucker attempting to dethrone Henry Cornish. However, Cornish’s athleticism and consistency yet again proved too strong.

In the ladies, Hayley Frayn took revenge over Charlotte Halls in another competitive match.

The Junior Boys final saw Isaac Baron and Owen Worth square off.

And on this showing, the future looks encouraging with these youngsters playing their part in a gripping contest, packed full of great tennis from both players. However, Worth was the more consistent player and retained his crown.

Cornish was again in three finals. In the Mixed Doubles he was partnered by Becky Perry. Their opponents were the consistent pairing of Jimmy Shanks and Ruth Cornish, who took the title after a very close match.

The Men’s Plate final was the battle of the hard hitters – not always going in court – as Finlay Worth overcame Marc Perry in a very entertaining match, while the Primary School Boys Singles will be held at a later date – between Hamish Morshead and Ronnie Shanks.

Two men’s and one ladies teams competed in the Summer League. The ladies won all of their matches in Division One to bounce back to the Premier, while the men’s A team finished mid-table and the B team avoided the wooden spoon.
