WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP SOUTH WEST TWO

Guildford Gazelles 28 Launceston Ladies 12

ALEX Hutchings’ brace was in vain as Launceston fell to defeat in Surrey on Sunday afternoon.

Launceston came out of the blocks swinging but unable to land a telling a blow as Guildford’s defensive structure proved tough to crack.

The hosts soon scored against the run of play and added a second as they went 12-0 in front.

The Cabettes responded well however, and continuous pressure soon paid off as Hutchings found a gap to break through and open Launceston’s account for the day. The scoreboard remained untouched at 14-5 going into half-time.

Again the Cornish side were soon camped on the Gazelles line, but again once possession changed hands they soon conceded again.

Not about to let the game get away from her, Hutchings kicked a wicked restart, resulting in a knock-on from Guildford. From the scrum she picked and barged her way through the defence and scored her second of the day to keep Launceston in the hunt. Flanker Caitlyn Hancock slotted the conversion for 21-12.

There was still plenty of time left on the clock, but the bodies started to feel the effect of over five weeks without a game.

The ladies threw what they had left at the Gazelles, but their impervious defence held strong. With 10 minutes left, Guildford broke down the lef wing and scored to take the game away from Launceston and secure the win.

The Ladies are back in action this Saturday as they host Cheltenham Tigers Seconds at Polson Bridge(2.30pm).
