WELCOMBE’S teenage judo star Wren Compton is heading to Belgium and Holland in the coming weeks to take part in competitions.
The 13-year-old started her journey in the sport at the Bude satellite club of Kingsley School Judo Club in 2021, and has already accomplished an impressive amount.
Last year, Wren medalled at the 2025 British Schools Championship, and a bronze medal in the Welsh Championship resulted in her being selected to the England Development Squad. She went on to top off the year by winning a bronze medal in the British National Judo Championships in Nottingham just before Christmas.
Wren trains three times a week in Morwenstow at the village community centre where the Bude branch of the club is based, and Bideford’s Kingsley School as well as monthly western area sessions and at the Great Britain training centre in Walsall on the outskirts of Birmingham.
She has a busy schedule over the next few months, competing in the English Open and with England squad in Antwerp (Belgium) and Venray (Holland) before moving into the under 18s cadet category from September this year.
Any organisations or individuals that feel that they can provide Wren with funding support to help her achieve her goals, please contact the club coaches via the Facebook page (Bude Judo) in the first instance.
A club official said: “The respective Morwenstow and Bideford bases welcome all ages and abilities to join in this great sport that can help develop kids and adults to develop fitness and confidence.
“The Morwenstow club now has a hardship fund available to help families to access classes with thanks expressed to the Cornwall Council Community Chest, Morwenstow Community Centre and Morwenstow Methodist Church. The club runs classes in Morwenstow on Wednesday evenings during term time, and Mondays and Thursdays in Bideford.”
