BUDE’S ladies teams continued their excellent start to the campaign with both sides emerging victorious in the West Hockey League.

The firsts welcomed fellow high-flyers Falmouth Thirds in Trelawney Division Two with both sides going into the game unbeaten.

Despite being short of players due to half-term, the ladies put in a brilliant team performance, working hard for each other across the pitch and racked up a 4-2 with braces for Briony Varcoe and Mia Flynn.

From back to front there were some fine individual performances. Rach Pomeroy made some crucial saves, while at the back Willow Du Plessis, Naomi Hatcher and Emily Smart worked tirelessly, facing some tough moments and making sure Falmouth had to work hard for their chances.

Flynn made some fantastic runs up the pitch, with EJ Biggadike also putting in some great attacking play and driving the team forward.

Forwards Briony Varcoe and Chloe Hall worked hard to create opportunities, while the midfield trio of Flynn, Caroline Hockridge and Biggadike alongside Charlotte Kingdon, Clarey Westaway and Claire Pipe kept things moving and battled hard throughout.

The development side made the short trip to Bodmin Seconds in Trelawney Division Three and came away with a 2-1 success.

Lizzie Tilley played her first ladies game in goal, leaving Jo Timmins to manage the team from the sidelines.

As expected it was Bodmin who applied the early pressure, while Bude had a rearranged back four as Indie Clarke came in as sweeper and Maeva Motsch played just infront of the back three. They made tackle after tackle assisted by Eva Clarke and Elsa Edwards.

Bodmin kept on attacking, but nearly fell behind as Tilly Collins and Tilly Francis were able to move the ball up to Bella Turner who moved the ball across the home D to Lottie Flynn lurking at the back post. However, her shot was well-saved by the home keeper.

The game flowed from one end to the other as Motsch, Collins and Ellie Middleton spoiled Bodmin’s advances by making timely tackles and recycling the ball out wide for Niamh Turner to drive into the D.

Bodmin were struggling to find a way through and Bude got their reward as Indie Clarke played the ball out to Francis who ran through several tackles before firing home from inside the D.

Bodmin dominated early on after the break and eventually levelled, but after some instructions on the sidelines from Timmins, they upped their game.

After Bella Turner was fouled the resulting short corner proved profitable as Francis pushed it out to Bella Turner. She slipped it to Flynn who slapped the ball towards the post where Francis reacted first to strike it into the back of the goal.

Bodmin pushed forward once more in search of a leveller, but Bude soaked up the pressure and held on for another three points.

Player of the match for the Seasiders, who visit Camborne School of Mines on Saturday (10.15am) in Penryn, was Motsch for her work in front of the defence.
