WEST HOCKEY LEAGUE TRELAWNEY DIVISION ONE
Bude 8 Newquay Thirds 1
After last week’s big win over Caradon, Bude were keen to continue their improvement into this game against the team at the bottom.
The tempo was high from the first whistle as Caroline Hockridge, EJ Biggerdyke and Izzy Sobey were dominant in midfield, making tackles and recycling the ball out to Mia Flynn on the left and Amber Quinn on the right.
The forwards were having shots but the Newquay defence and goalkeeper held firm denying Bude.
It wasn't long before a run down the right from Izzy Sobey picked out Hockridge who fired the ball into Chloe Hall who sidestepped the keeper to slot the ball home.
Newquay started to mount attacks of their own but Elsa Edward, Emily Smart, Naomi Hatcher and Evie Varcoe were on hand to thwart their attacks.
Hatcher played the ball to Smart who passed to Biggerdyke as she ran down the length of the pitch before finding Quinn. After her shot from was saved, Sobey reacted first to sweep the ball into the goal.
Newquay continued to push forward and were rewarded with a short corner and with a slick routine reduced the deficit to one goal.
Bude were a little astounded, but from the restart Flynn had lots of space on the left beating two defenders. She then pushed the ball across the D where Niamh Turner calmly fired her shot past the on coming keeper.
With lots of talk at half time Bude were keen to convert more chances in the second half. It was Newquay though that put the home side under early pressure, but Tilly Collins and Smart were always first to the ball, clearing the danger away.
Sobey and Hockridge controlled the middle and forwards, while Quinn, Hall, and Flynn were enjoying the game passing smoothly up the pitch. Hall converted her second a little while later, neatly flicking the ball past the Newquay keeper.
This was a turning point in the game as Bude were relentless, everyone getting involved from the defence, midfield and forwards. This resulted in a short corner, where Hatcher pushed the ball out to Hockridge before slipping it to Hall who beat the keeper for her third of the day.
Newquay couldn't match Bude for fitness or ability, Bude shuffled Biggerdyke to the right and Sobey came into the middle. It was Biggerdyke who created the fifth goal, going round the defence and crossing to Sobey who made no mistake shooting the ball into the goal.
Bude’s defence were able to get higher up the pitch to help keep Newquay penned into their own half.
The home side were playing with confidence and belief in their abilities and it wasn't long before Hall got her fourth of the afternoon after another well worked move found her in the D where she put it past the keeper once again.
Bude continued to apply the pressure on Newquay’s defence and it was Flynn’s turn to pick up a rebound and go round the keeper to make it eight.
Next week for Bude, who sit in eighth place in the standings, is a trip to face Plymouth Uni this Saturday (10.30am), before hosting Okehampton a week later.
