TRURO City moved up to fourth in National League South last night despite being held to a 2-2 draw at promoted Farnham Town.
The Tinners led at the Memorial Ground inside eight minutes via prolific frontman Tyler Harvey, and doubled their advantage when former AFC Bournemouth youngster Max Kinsey nodded in skipper Connor Riley-Lowe’s corner.
But their ambitious Surrey hosts were a different animal after the break and two goals in eight minutes from Rakish Bingham and Trae Cook-Appiah ensured the Clarets got some reward in front of a crowd of 751.
Having advanced in the FA Cup on Saturday with a 4-0 success over Cirencester Town, Truro boss John Askey made five changes as Zac Bell, Will Dean, Riley-Lowe, Yassine En-Neyah and Jack Stretton all returned to the fold.
The Tinners started well with wing-back Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain being denied early on by home stopper Mike Eacott, however he couldn’t do anything soon after as Harvey superbly flicked in strike partner Stretton’s cross at the near post.
Both teams had half chances with Harvey amongst them for Truro when he shot narrowly wide following a poor pass in the middle of the park, but the Cornishmen doubled their lead eight minutes before half-time when Kinsey guided Riley-Lowe’s inswinger from the right into the far post.
However, Farnham came roaring out of the blocks after the break and after Bingham pulled one back on 59 minutes from Bobby Joe Taylor’s cross, fellow attacker Cook-Appiah beat Aidan Stone following a fine move down the left involving Taylor and full-back Brandon Mason to set up a thrilling final 20 minutes.
Chances came and went for both sides, including a brilliant save from Stone to deny Cook-Appiah as Truro moved back into the all-important play-off places, one place off leaders Maidstone United.
Such is the incredibly competitive nature of the division, Maidstone are on 19 points after 10 games, yet only three ahead of Dorking Wanderers in ninth.
Speaking afterwards, boss John Askey had mixed emotions. He said: “In the end it’s probably a point gained. Being two-up we’re disappointed, and with the goals we gave away, particularly the first one. (The) momentum changes then.
“They started to go long and we started to struggle with that and they had one or two chances, but it was just disappointing we didn’t control the game in the second half like we did the first.”
Truro were by far the better side before the break.
Askey continued: “I thought first half we had to play really well to get to two goals up and from what I’ve seen of them tonight, they’re a decent side.
“Going into half-time two goals up were pretty satisfied with that, but as we know, 2-0 is always a funny score and it can quickly change if the opposition score.
They were always going to change things and we weren’t quite able to control the game the same. We started to go a little bit long and when we were in and around their box we were rushing things instead of building up play and creating pressure.
“Consequently the turnover of the ball was quite high and that’s what’s cost us.”
The Tinners are back on the road on Saturday when they head to fourth bottom Braintree Town (3pm).
