AS the old adage goes, “you had one job”. Someone at Cornwall Council is probably in deep water after a sign for Plymouth Marina was erected … in Falmouth.
It’s a lovely looking sign; the trouble is, it’s 70 miles away from the right spot. The fact it also points to the Greenbank Hotel suggests it was tailor-made for Falmouth.
It begs the question, did no one from the council or its highways arm Cormac notice the huge error as they were putting it up next to the Sainsbury’s roundabout at the town’s entrance?
Photographs of the errant sign were posted on a Facebook page dedicated to Falmouth, with comments including: “Whoever erected that needs a geography lesson - what an insult!!”
Another amused reader added: “Ahh, that’s why I couldn’t find the boat I was meant to be working on down there today. I was in the wrong county!”
Someone asked: “I wonder if the good people of Plymouth are equally enjoying their ‘Falmouth Marina’ sign?”
Other people commented along the lines of “idiots”, “are you joking?” and “that’s embarrassing”.
The sign has been removed as quickly as it appeared and possibly posted over the Tamar.
A Cornwall Council spokesperson said: “While Plymouth Marina is worthy of a tourist sign in the right location, this particular sign was not made to our specification. It will be replaced and the cost met by the manufacturer.”
