PUPILS in North Cornwall have been flexing their musical muscles thanks to a special school visit.
Pupils at Marhamchurch C of E Academy enjoyed a day of music-making led by local community organisation RootNotes. The sessions were run by musician Becki Driscoll, who works with groups across the region to bring music into the heart of communities. Children took part in hands-on activities including composing their own music before finishing the afternoon by performing a collective piece together.
The workshops proved a big hit with pupils, many of whom were keen to know when they could take part again.
Following the visit, the school has emphasised the importance of music within the academy, stating that pupils are encouraged to explore their creativity through listening, performing and composing.
“Children also have opportunities to learn instruments such as guitar, brass and woodwind, and some take part in local youth ensembles including the Triggshire and Triggety orchestras, giving them the chance to express themselves and build confidence through music,” a school spokesperson explained.
Commenting on the visit, school headteacher Deirdre Petersen said: “The children loved the chance to compose, perform and try something new together, and it was wonderful to see their enthusiasm. We are so grateful to Becki for coming in and sharing her passion and expertise. The whole school was alive with music.”
“It's been great coming in to work with the pupils at Marhamchurch,” added Becki Driscoll “I taught a tune called 'Gull on the Shore' and the children played a variety of different instruments to make a band together. It's lovely to work in a school that clearly values music!”
Tracey Cleverly, CEO of Learning Academy Partnership, added: “Opportunities to perform, compose and work creatively together help children build confidence and discover new interests, so it’s great to see the pupils at Marhamchurch enjoying music in this way.”
