THE management of a Bodmin pub which has had its licence suspended has vowed to come back stronger.

Cornwall Council suspended the premises licence for the venue in Bodmin known as Chapel An Gansblydhen on Fore Street in the town after a 16-minute meeting of its Licensing Act sub committee on Friday, August 7.

It means that for the duration of the suspension of the licence, the venue is not permitted to offer licensable activities, such as the sale of alcohol.

The suspension of the licence comes in the latest turn in what has been a troubled tenure for multiple operators since the venue was closed by Wetherspoons and comes after its latest launch had been well-received by residents and visitors alike.

Devon and Cornwall Police submitted an application to Cornwall Council seeking an expedited summary review relating to the licence in respect of Chapel An Gansblydhen under Section 53A of the Licensing Act 2003 as “the premises concerned are associated with serious crime and serious disorder.”

The notice served does not specify what the crime and disorder it refers to is related to.

Cornwall Council’s licensing committee resolved to suspend the premises licence with immediate effect, with the minutes for the meeting stating that its reason for doing so was in the interest of upholding licensing objectives.

However, the management of Chapel An Gansblydhen have vowed to take on the lessons learned and deliver on its ambitions.

In a statement confirming the temporary closure, it was stated: “Unfortunately, recent events have resulted in licensing action being taken and, while the appropriate process is followed with the authorities, the chapel has temporarily ceased trading.

“I know there will be plenty of questions, rumours and opinions flying around. However, there are matters currently being dealt with through the proper channels, so I am not going to discuss individual allegations, staff members or ongoing proceedings publicly.

“What I can tell you is this: it is not the end of the chapel.

“I remain completely determined to bring this venue back, make the necessary changes, strengthen the way the business operates and continue building the chapel into the venue I always believed it could become.

“There will be changes behind the scenes, there will be some new faces and there will be lessons taken from what has happened.

“When we move forward, we will do so stronger, wiser and determined to provide the welcoming, responsible and family-friendly venue that Bodmin deserves.

“Subject to the necessary permissions and approvals, we are also exploring whether we may be able to reopen initially for food and soft drinks only while the wider licensing process continues. Any confirmed arrangements will be announced once everything is properly agreed.

“To everyone who has supported us, eaten with us, drank with us, attended our events, shared our posts, recommended us and continued walking through those doors — thank you.

“Your support genuinely means more than you probably realise.

“To those waiting for us to fail - you might be waiting a little longer.”
