A SOUTH West equestrian has been selected to represent England at a prestigious inter-nation competition.

Judy Holloway, from Okehampton, is set to take the course in the coming weeks as she represents the nation at the Home International Endurance Competition. Judy, alongside her 15-year-old homebred Crabbet Arab mare, Rabbalina, will travel to Scotland to compete from September 4 to September 6.

The selection is a significant achievement, recognising the dedicated partnership between Judy and Rabbalina, whose stable name is Midge. The pair will tackle a challenging long-distance course, putting their fitness, stamina and partnership to the test against top riders from across the home nations.

"I am very honoured to have been selected,” Judy said. "Midge is definitely a one-person pony, and I am very honoured to be riding her. We will aim to ride as we normally do, within my equine partner's limits and try to conserve her energy. It’s a long way to travel, so we have to be mindful of that."

The journey to the England team has been a long one, built on years of training and dedication. Judy and Midge are a familiar sight exploring the local countryside, using the varied bridleways, forestry and farmland around their home.

Having started her journey 30 years ago by helping to crew for another rider, Judy is passionate about encouraging others to get involved. "It all began by helping to crew someone, then I had a few rides and have never looked back," she explained. "I would encourage anyone to have a go. It's such a friendly sport and we get to ride in the most varied countryside, so what's not to like?"
