PARTICIPANTS of the Cornwall Banger Rally Challenge are embarking on a chaotic week-long journey across Europe to raise money for charity next month.

Benidorm or Bust will see dozens of knackered vehicles take to the road for an epic fundraising trip across the continent, all in aid of good causes.

Last year’s banger rally, which took participants to Vienna in Austria, raised over £30,000 for various local and national charities.

Those taking part this year can expect daily missions and challenges, scenic mountain passes, and a huge final-night blowout when all the teams finish the journey in Benidorm, Spain.

Members of the public are invited to watch the convoy set off on their epic trip from Charlestown Harbour on the morning of Sunday, September 13. Visitors can expect a carnival atmosphere in what promises to be a fun family morning (from 9am to 12.30pm) with live music, charity stands and plenty of fun and mischief.

Organisers do not reveal the route before-hand, only the start and finish destinations, presenting the ralliers with a feeling of stepping into the unknown. The vehicles, most of which will be creatively-decorated, must cost less than £1,000 and be more than 15 years old to fit the banger criteria.

With many challenges to be contested along the way, the end of the trip will see prizes being handed out to three best teams overall, with the winning group receiving £500 for their chosen charity.

Those awarded with the best themed car, best fancy dress and the spirit of the rally award, will be given £200 as par of their fundraising efforts. Winners also receive the challenge’s coveted piston trophies, while awards will be also be handed out to each of the stage winners.
