A CONTROVERSIAL car park renovation has left residents calling the site ‘not fit for purpose’ and ‘ a serious health and safety issue’.

Earlier this year, Cornwall Council launched a project to renovate Widemouth Bay Car Park, a beauty spot overlooking the Cornish coast which has been enjoyed by many over the years.

The bulk of the renovations saw the installation of a ‘permeable, geogrid surface made of recycled plastic cellular pavers.’

However, ever since its completion, the project has been subject to backlash from locals, with many saying the site’s appearance has been tarnished. Now, residents have expressed concern over the safety of the site due to a number of defects.

Resident Catherine Appleton took to social media to raise the issues. She said: “This is the new Widemouth carpark, only a couple of months or so since it opened. As predicted, thanks to these blocks being laid on earth that obviously wasn't compressed, they're raising up all over the car park. And the blocks aren't even secured to each other, or the earth at all, so this is now a serious health and safety issue, because it's now a real trip hazard. And makes walking across even more difficult for young children, anyone with mobility issues etc.

“I'd say it's a joke, except there's nothing funny about the complete waste of money this project has been, as it's obviously not fit for purpose.”

However, following the concern, Cornwall Council has expressed that it is taking steps to repair damage.

A spokesperson from Cornwall Council said: “We are aware of some issues with some blocks lifting, and these are being regularly inspected and repaired when required. The affected area will be closed temporarily from the autumn to allow for further seeding and grass establishment. This closure has been delayed until after the busy summer season has concluded.”
