THE organisers of Camelford Carnival have expressed their sadness after they had to cancel this year’s event.
They say they were ‘left with no choice’ but to cancel the event after the potential impact of Storm Austen and its associated weather meant that safety could have been compromised if it proceeded.
A spokesperson for the Camelford Carnival organising committee said: “It is with great sadness that the Camelford Carnival Committee has made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s carnival.
“This decision has not been made lightly. We have had numerous conversations and telephone calls with Cornwall Council’s safety officer, carefully considering all the options available to us. However, as a committee, we firmly believe that everyone’s safety must always come first.
“We are absolutely devastated to have to make this announcement. So much time, hard work and effort has gone into preparing for this year’s carnival, and we know just how much it means to our town, our community and everyone who has been looking forward to the celebrations.
“Unfortunately, as much as we would love to go ahead, we cannot control the storm or the weather conditions, and we must put the safety of everyone involved above everything else.
“We know that many people will be disappointed, and we are truly sorry. This has been an incredibly difficult decision for us to make, but we know it is the right one under the circumstances.
“As a committee, we will now come together to discuss the situation and work on a plan moving forward. We will keep everyone updated as soon as we have further information to share.
“We would like to thank everyone who has supported us, worked so hard behind the scenes, prepared floats, made costumes, organised events and helped bring this year’s carnival together. We appreciate every single one of you, and we share in your disappointment.
“Camelford Carnival is about our town, our people and our community. Although this year has not turned out as we had hoped, the spirit of our carnival remains strong, and we will do our best to work out the next steps together.
“Thank you for your understanding, patience and continued support.”
