THE annual holding of the Guy Fawkes night celebrations brought some distinctive efforts for the Guy before the judging panel who were left with a tough decision on which to award the prize to.
A striking effort of the Bodmin Beast was the victor in the competition, with the creation the hard efforts of the town’s 3rd Bodmin Scout Group, based near to the Bodmin Beacon.
Coming second was a Minecraft-esque design of a black cat, the impressive creation of the Lanivet and District Under Fives.
In third place was a creation of a beast that had quite the bite for its small size, the lovingly created work of the Bodmin Pre School.
Other entries that were also judged was a ‘huge Beast of Bodmin’ created by the Castle Canyke Scout group and a rather aggressive looking Panda themed entry which was created by the Bodmin and District Horizon Club.
The Bodmin Fireworks Committee invited Colin Hooper and Cllr Andy Coppin to judge this year’s entries while set up was underway
For a former mayor of Bodmin and councillor of 19 years, Cllr Andy Coppin, the delight of being able to witness the creativity that went into the guys was also one that marked a familial anniversary.
He said: “It was an honour to be chosen to help judge the guys at this year’s Bodmin fireworks event. Especially on their 30th anniversary celebration of it being held at Priory.”
Cllr Coppin told the tale of the role that his own father, Mr Pat Coppin played in the fireworks events held in the past.
He continued: “My father, Pat Coppin was involved with the annual fireworks event all those years ago, so it was nice to be asked to attend.
“I still remember watching fireworks up at the Beacon as a child, but what we see now each year at the Priory Park event surpassed it spectacularly.”
