WORKS are set to begin on the final removal of what remains of the old tennis courts at Stanhope Park.

Cllr Jon Hutchings, the mayor of Holsworthy, said that he met with fellow councillors and contractors to decide what to do with the disused part of the play amenity.

It has been decided that it will be removed to create a better level area that joins on to the main park area which in turn will facilitate an extra football pitch to be marked out on a flatter part of the playing surface to benefit the youth football team.

The mayor confirmed that the work will begin during the week beginning August 22, with Heras fencing to be erected on the site.

He also acknowledged that while some will have preferred the tennis court to be refurbished, it will be of benefit to the youth football team who use the park.

Cllr Hutchings said: “I met with Cllr Helen Parker, Cllr Lyndon Piper, Glynn Martin from GM Contractors and Jason Jones from the Holsworthy Youth Football. GM contractors were previously awarded the contract to remove the concrete slab.

“The meeting was to agree the final specifications for the removal of the old tennis court in Stanhope Park.

“The town council working with the Youth Football have agreed to remove the tennis court slab and create a better level area joining onto the main park area so an extra football pitch can be marked out on a flatter playing surface for the Youth Football.

“Works are due to be started when Heras fencing will be erected around the slab and a track for vehicles laid. I appreciate this will upset some people who would have preferred to have kept and refurbished the Tennis Court but at least it will give our Youth Footballers a more level playing surface.”
