PREPARATIONS for the May Day celebrations in Lewannick are coming together at pace – with the event set to offer a vast array of things to do for all involved.
Rehearsals for the big day are well underway, with both the main dance comprising of adults and children over 10 and the parade for the village’s younger residents set to be the centre point of an event which will also include food, shopping and entertainment for all.
As well as being a fixture in the village’s social calendar, it is also an event that raises money for projects and groups within Lewannick.
The event’s organisers said: “We have raised thousands for community projects and groups. Every year we pick a group or project in the village to support.
“Over the years this has included new community marquees, a bbq, equipment for the play area, tables for the stay and play. Though I think one of our best purchases has to be benches for the village green. It’s lovely to see them all being used by so many people, all year round. Last year we had to replace one, and we are hoping to fund a second one this year.”
Accompanying the offerings will be an ever-popular range of craft and produce marquees, with the organisers saying that they always strive to deliver something new and exciting.
Keeping with the theme of benefiting the community, the tents feature only local crafters, makers, bakers, growers and artists – with the talents of the little corner of the United Kingdom which Lewannick and the surrounding areas in Cornwall occupy benefitting from the platform from which to display and sell their products.
However, with the day rapidly approaching, there are still vacancies for local traders to join in the event – with organisers seeking plant sellers to join in the big day.
The Lewannick May Day celebrations will begin at 1pm on May 4, with the parade following at 2pm prior to the main dance performed by youngsters and adults alike.
Food and drink will be available for participants and spectators, with the Archer Arms being joined by a barbecue, an abundance of sweet treats, ice creams and cakes available around the site of the May Day celebrations.
There will also be food, shopping and entertainment from all ages, with the organisers adding: “We have food, shopping, entertainment for all ages. Thank you to Horizon Home improvements whose sponsorship means we have had some amazing spectacles over the years with the giant slide being a particular big hit.
“We have really worked hard over the years to make it a brilliant day for the whole family.”
Full details of the events which will be taking place on the day and updates can be found by searching for the event on social media, with the organisers stating: “All updates are posted on our Facebook events page.
