A FAMILIAR Bude landmark is set to disappear - at least temporarily, it has been confirmed.

The bright, vibrant Welcome to Bude sign has been confirmed as being moved from its present location at The Crescent, due to the unavailability of its current location.

It is likely that the sudden unavailability of the location which the sign has adorned for the best part of at least nearly 20 years is due to the sale of the property.

The two-bedroom cottage had been advertised as ‘For Sale’ by Webbers Estate Agents with a guide price of £275,000.

It was a property that was advertised as being in need of some renovation work with the listing stating: “Outside, the rear garden runs parallel to the River Neet, adding a distinctive backdrop to the property. The house does require modernisation, and a historic damp issue is evident within the bay window of the dining room, understood to have been caused by a burst water main.

“For buyers prepared to take on the necessary works, this is a compelling chance to unlock the potential of a well located Bude home.”

Bude-Stratton Town Council said that the sign, which had been replaced in recent years from a Cornish themed colour scheme to the present blue and white design was in storage while a hunt for a new location was underway.

A spokesperson for the council said: “A familiar Bude landmark is moving.

“The ‘Welcome to Bude’ sign on The Crescent has greeted people arriving in the town for many years. As its existing location is no longer available, the sign will shortly be removed and safely stored while we actively seek a suitable new location.

“We know it is a familiar sight for residents and visitors alike and look forward to seeing it welcoming people to Bude again from a new home in the future.”
